(double click on pictures to enlarge) Our visit to the Rio Grande Valley has been rich in the Mexican and Spanish heritage of the people. Our trip to Mexico gave us a better understanding of the Border Patrol. That is because Tom was detained for 1-1/2 hours! He had a nuclear stress test 4 days before and apparently was still HOT! I could have told the Feds that. Yes, he set off the nuclear radiation monitors. So after the isotope was identified and reported to Wash DC (no exaggeration) he was given clearance to re-enter the U.S. Do we think the illegals and terrorists are crossing at border patrol? Since Tom only went to Mexico to humor me, I have some patching-up to do. We topped off our stay by going to a Texas Bullfight. Texas ... read more

We started our ministry at Bibleville on Sunday January 4 and will continue through the week. Pray that the messages will produce fruit in the lives of the people here. Lynette was able to speak to the ladies at the Tea and had a good reception. The weather has been beautiful and it will be hard to come back to the cold and snow. However, it will be good to get back home after some much time away these last few months and get back to a normal routine.... read more

Birds. Birds. Birds. Birds everywhere. It's easy to see why so many serious birders consider this area paradise. Our second day here a large flock of Green Parakeets landed in the tree next to our motorhome. So noisy in flight and absolutely silent when perched. And well camoflaged! There were several of us standing around with binoculars looking at the three or four birds we spotted but when they suddenly flew, atleast 30 or 40 birds suddenly took flight! And they're big - 13" long with a 21" wingspan - not the usual caged parakeet we can buy in pet stores. They flew over almost every day we were here but never landed in our tree again. Since we arrived I've seen 18 "lifers" (birds seen for the very first time). On Monday (12/29) we drove ... read more

I know.  I know.  I promised to keep a travel blog then promptly vanished into a technology void.  So sorry.  But from this point forward I will be connected to the rest of the world via wifi and will try to do a much better job.  So...this entry will be to try and get all caught up.  We finished up our stay at Patagonia Lake State Park on December 1st.  We thoroughly enjoyed our seven weeks in the park, volunteering for the Sonoita Creek State Natural Area, but it did feel good to be on the road again.  Our first day of travel took us roughly 225 miles to Rockhound State Park outside of Deming, New Mexico.  What a spectacular setting - and a very nice campground.  The park allows you to take 12 pounds of ... read more

After visiting Mike & Donna; Nancy, Ron and family we headed to South Texas. Everywhere we found new friends to play Pickle Ball with. It's a game being played by people of all ages. You can set it up in your driveway! Go to www.pickleball.com to find out about it. Went to a country 'n Western Opry in Yokum, TX. Also went over to Progresso, Mexico. Border patrol with oozies! Drug and people sniffing dogs on our way out. Sad to leave our new friends but time to leave Texas. Heading North to meet up with daughter Kathy and grandaughter Megan at Boston Children's Hospital in April. The adventure continues! ... read more

Mon. Feb 26th: Today was the long awaited day for the windshield replacement. All went smoothly with them locating us and having the correct windshield. Getting our old windshield out was a bit difficult, but successful. Then they came to the challenge of getting the new one in without breaking it. We’ve heard that it’s difficult to do successfully. They worked really hard trying to get it in and inch by inch it got into position. They almost had it completely in, when on the last section it CRACKED!!! Now we have different and more cracks than in our old windshield. The next new windshield is being shipped today and should be here within the next couple of days. We decided we’ll take the RV into the shop to have the next one installed. This afternoon ... read more

Fri. Feb. 23rd: Yesterday was a travel day. It was uneventful except for seeing a bald eagle. My old bird book doesn’t have them this far south, but my newer bird book has a much more expanded range as they recover from DDT. We’re settled into a campground in the suburbs of Mission, Texas. Our campsite backs up to some relatively new medium/large sized houses. They’re very nice but a far cry from what we’ve had behind us at the last 3 campgrounds. It’s odd being back in a town. It was only a mile or two to go out to dinner tonight. We arrived before our new windshield. Fortunately it arrived in today’s deliveries to the glass shop, so we’re scheduled for Monday. Our mail has not yet caught up with us. This is another ... read more

Motorhome News from North America 35 3rd February - 14th February 2007 Texas, ‘The Lone Star State’, to the Rio Grande and Mexico Groundhog Day, Superbowl, Rockport, King Ranch, The Rio Grande, Laguna Atacosta Wildlife Refuge, Brownsville and Matamoros, Mexico. Life takes on the rhythm of the tide, routine and habit, daily chores and hourly challenges, writing and reading, new distant places and smiling faces, as we circle around this huge continent like the hands of a clock along its highways and byways. Is it not surprising then, that we might sometimes miss the obvious? Janice, ever observant, alertly tuned to the sights and sounds of people and places, suddenly realised that postmen are the exception here; they use right-hand drive vehicles to drop off and pick up mail direct from the post box outside each ... read more

Yesterday we planted posts after clearing around a mesquite tree at Osprey Overlook. Thorn bushes like to grow close to these trees keeping their roots shaded. The walking trail to Alligator Pond road that Will mowed last week looks pretty good. We did a little trimming and it is wide enough for two to walk side-by-side. It was about 90 degrees and we drank lots of water and tried to stay in the shade; Will was nice and cool in the bobcat while drilling the fence posts as it is air conditioned. Kathy directs the drill to the correct position and Will drills the hole out. Sometimes it takes several tries to get the hole deep enough. When the holes are drilled Will puts a post into each one and we measure to make sure it ... read more

A day at the zoo watching the gorillas, hippos, monkeys, big cats and birds then dancing to music at Harley's. . .. After our morning walk followed by breakfast at the outpost we prepared a flyer to put in stores advertizing the black van for sale. We are ready now to sell it. We came up with a list of everything included with he van and put a price to each item. It came to $4000 and includes the new brakes and transmission along with mattress, 12-volt cooler, inverter, etc. After lunch we drove to Brownsville, about 40 minutes drive and went to the Gladys Porter Zoo. High lights were: Gorillas at play, Hippos in the water, Monkeys swinging from their tails, big cats sleeping, and Flamingos and Pelecans bathing in their ponds. There are three ... read more
