The ride to the winery in
Stonewall was filled with wildlife to say the least. The worst thing that I have ever seen was all of those spiders that came out of the desert and crossed the highway under our car! The tarantulas were awful! I do NOT like spiders. It was incredible to be going 70 down the highway and see a spider so big on the road that you see it lift it's leg while it's walking.... and that is exactly what happened. We wanted pictures of the, so we stopped the car on the totally deserted highway and Lindsey got out and snapped a few. Totally gross! We got to
Fredericksburg which was a really cute little town, but mostly closed because it Sunday. Seems everything is closed on Sunday's around these parts! The GPS told us to make a left so we did. It then proceeded to take us on a wild goose chase of sorts through someone's farm. The first turn it told us to take was down someone's driveway, but I ignored it because I didn't think that looked right. It recalculated our route and told us to take the next turn. This time
we did, right though a fence that said no tresspassing!! We ended up in a field with a bunch of cows around us. Too funny! My first thought was that we were never going to make it to the winery and that we would have to just keep going and find another place to stay for the night. We got back out on the main road, both of us had thought that it was strange that we hadn't seen any signs yet for the
Becker Vineyards so going further seemed like the logical thing to do. About three miles ahead we finally saw the sign! Thank goodness . We turned in and found a very beautiful vineyard and a cute Bed and Breakfast. We went into the tasting room and let them know that we were there. They gave us the keys to the back cabin and we hung out and did a little tasting while they were still open. They gave us a tour of the winery and told us how the different wines were made, which was really interesting. Around 5 we decided to go check out where we were staying. It took us about 10 minutes to
get back there and I would venture to say that it was no more than a mile and a half away!! We basically had to drive in the fields to get there. The cabin itself was absolutely adorable! It was very old, but redone so that there was electricity, running water, and AC... which was much needed as we had finally hit the humidity. We got our stuff settled in and went back into town to get something to eat. Once again, food was great! After dinner we decided that we would look for something to do. Unfortunately the only thing that was open was the Wal-Mart. The movie theater didn't play anything after 7pm, the laundromat was closed until further notice, and no stores were open. We decided that we would go back to the cabin and just hang out. It was so peaceful out there. No sounds except for the cicadas... a sound that I had missed after moving out of the south. We went to bed and slept in, which again, must have really been needed! We stripped the beds and took everything out to the car with us to bring it back to the winery. We
went in and dropped off the key and forgot to give them back the sheets!! The car was so filled with crap, that we didn't even notice that we had forgotten them until about 2 hours into our trip to
Dallas! How embarrassing. We decided to find a place to wash them so that we could send them the next day. Driving to Dallas we drove through some interesting places.
Johnson City which wouldn't let you get through it without knowing that it was the home of
LBJ... every few hundred feet or so there would be another sign boasting the fact. We drove through
Waco and
Austin and finally made it to
Dallas to
411 Elm Street which is the address to the
Texas School Book Depository where
Lee Harvey Oswald was an employee and the site of where he set up his sniper station when he shot
JFK. The sixth floor is now a museum and we went in and did the tour. The tour itself was tastefully nice and really informative. Unfortuantely we didn't arrive in time to really see it all, but we did get to see a lot. After the tour we drove just east of the city to
Rockwall where we found a place to stay that had a laundry so we could get our mistake with the sheets taken care of. Today we're heading off to the Land of Elvis!!
