May 7, Thursday My first inclination was to return to Veracruz and register my displeasure, but I decided about all they could do would be to say sorry, and maybe clean up the bike which was still an oily mess. So instead of backtracking 2 hours, I pulled over at the first auto lavenderia, and the guys completely cleaned the oil off the bike, by hand, in an hour and 15 minutes for 150 pesos ( $10.50) On the way again, and I was soon riding through the northern "desert" in 105 degrees. What fun. I stopped a few times for gas and water, and made it to the border at Matamoras before sunset. it took about an hour to get across, counting dealing with the agents on both sides, and then I stopped at the ... read more

We went to Texas to meet Kim’s family. Kim has two brothers, Frank and Tony. Frank is married to Dominica and they have two kids, Julia and Griffin. Tony is married to Leslie and they also have two kid’s Megan and Katie. Kim’s father Jim and step-mother Laura along with Tony and his family, visited us at Frank’s house in Fort Worth, Texas. We next visited Kim’s mother Margaret and her step-father Robert in Denton, Texas. While we were at Margaret’s house, Kim’s aunt Connie, Uncle Dave and her grandmother stopped by to visit with us. We also went out to eat Mexican with Kim's cousin Desi and her husband Kevin. We had a great time visiting with all of Kim’s relatives. Welcome to Fort Worth y'all. And what a town! Our Texas experience so far has been amazing. We have loved every moment and that’s thanks to the people and landscapes we have meet and seen. Our Fort Worth experience was around the Historic Stockyards area. The day started with a longhorn cattle drive, with 13 longhorn cows and a couple of cowboys. They drove them from the market, down the main street and back to the market again. It was very cool and made us miss home a little. From there we explored the stockyards; lucky for us it was market day. However the selling process was a little difference from the Pakenham VLE. They had a room full of men who were bidding, shouting different prices, and buying the cattle that were shown on TVs. ... read more

I am not sure where to start about Luiz.At the beginning,I guess. He grew up in Manaus,Brazil, on the banks of the Amazon. As a teenager,he worked for the only float plane charter service in that part of Brazil. It was run by some Americans in support of a group of anthropologists. They took a liking to him and offered to sponsor him to come to the U.S.He took them up on it and immigated to Southern California, got a job bagging groceries and enrolled in a junior college .After a year of working on his English and taking science and math courses,he transferred to UCLA.After 2 years there,he got drafted, trained as a lab technician and sent to Vietnam.Upon arrival they decided that Special Forces needed a lab tech,so they gave him a Green Beret and sent him off to ... read more

What I've Been Up To I can't believe I have been in Texas for over 5 weeks! Unbelievable how fast time has flown! My days have been filled with various people and activites. Less than a week after my arrival I began working at Chipotle Mexican Grill. My last day was Sunday. Working there filled most of my evenings. I got to meet many people and brush up on my spanish while working there. I even made a couple of friends. One was Becky, who doesn't work there, but was a regular who temps as an RN at one of the nearby hospitals. She lives in Kansas and heads home the same time I leave for New Orleans. We're hoping she gets a stiint in NOLA and can come visit me! I also met Mike; a ... read more

Albuquerque Never Ends I still have not decided whether my timing was good or bad in this city of balloons. I suppose good, since, all in all, no harm done. After finishing my blog on Wednesday, I hopped in the car to cruise the Querqe. It didn't take long to realize that, having been on the road and in multiple cities over the past month and a half, I'd seen nearly every kind of sight. I asked locals what there is to see in town: Botanical gardens (Remember L.A.?), Old Town (drove thru...same o' same o') Mass ascension of Hot Air Balloons (yeah...TOTALLY bummed, THAT happened at 7 this morning. I just wasn't feeling too inspired, so I grabbed something to quench my thirst and caught up on some quiet time. After reading and journalling ... read more

Today is my first day back. I have spent the last week in Chicago, IL training, discussing, and fellowshipping with the other 37 YAGMs serving abroad this year in Mexico, Uruguay, Argentina, the UK, Kenya, South Africa, Slovakia, Palestine, and India. What a week! It was phenomenal to get to know so many wonderfully beautiful people in such a short amount of time. Even though I know we will not all stay in touch once we get settled in our respectice countries and placements, it is comforting to know that I am not alone in this. There are 38 of us that share a bond through this last week's orientation, and now through the experience of having dedicated ourselves to living and serving abroad, loving in the name of Christ. Monday morning and afternoon we all ... read more

Monday morning my Uncle cooked us a breakfast of sausage and biscuits. We loaded up my Aunt's van and headed toward the train station in Fort Worth. We made one wrong turn once we got into the city and had to backtrack a little. We found that across the country...people are bad at giving directions. So, instead we used common sense and the map we had and found it with no trouble. We ate lunch at Subway in the train station and said our goodbyes. It was a couple hours before the train came. We tried to check some of our baggage through to Boston, but were told it could only be checked to Chicago. It was 110 shortly after 2pm when the train came. We waited ouside, in our travels, for the most part it ... read more

Hey everyone! I just wanted to let everybody know that I am back home in America. I got home on Tuesday June 24th but went straight to church camp the following Sunday. I just got back from camp yesterday. So I finally found time to sit down and let everyone know I made it home safe. I want to thank you so much for all the thoughts and prayers that were in my behalf. I appreciate them more that you will ever know! The things I was able to do and experience while I was there was amazing and I think God everyday for allowing me to do them. I am so blessed to know people like you who encourage and support me. Thank you for everything you have done!! In Christian Love, Callie... read more
