Howdy! If you're planning on being in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area I highly suggest you go to the Stockyards in Fort Worth to get a real Texas (aka Tejas) experience. I was previously in Fort Worth, I had an exchange student arrive from Germany and I wanted to show her around. There was actually a group of us with exchange students and we all piled onto a bus and decided to go to the Stockyards. Eating While there I noticed many people dressed up with cowboy outfits, Steak Houses (I reccomend a place called Risky's Steakhouse*), even a Stock Yard Hotel! There food here is actually pretty good**, I enjoy ribs but I enjoy steak more, so naturally that's what I requested. It was amazing! Definetly worth trying! ** If I may offer a tip, when ... read more

Well hello everyone, It is our last night in the great state of Texas and America. We are all packed and ready to head to DFW at 10:30 but thought we would enjoy a Heineken and the Lakers game. We just wanted to get our taste buds ready for Heineken in its home: The Netherlands. Brandon and I don't know what we are getting ourselves into...but we like it...it feels good... like warm sake after a long night...you know what I am saying. Boats and Hoes, See you on the other side... read more

Monday ,leaving Houston, the 4th largest city in America behind, we drove up north today to Fort Worth , Texas. We saw a few of the small oil wells, well I think they were. The ones that look like giant hammers going up and down very slowly. They are scattered around the place , but we seem to come across about 20 of them and then no more for awhile. Got set up and then went and got some groceries after our bbq tea. Awesome evenings except for the bloody mozzies, they are shocking at the moment, so had to move inside. Tuesday , we drove around the downtown area of Fort Worth. Over the bridge and down into the flat land known as ' The Stockyards ', 125 acres of one of the biggest saleyards ... read more

Fort Worth to Clayton - Tuesday 13th October From Dallas we set off in the rain to the Old Stockyards in Fort Worth, an area full of steaks houses, cowboy’s gift shops and an old rodeo coliseum. Upon arrival we saw a demonstration of a traditional cattle drive through the town’s cobbled streets. We then had a look in the old train station, a massive building that now houses lots of gift shops but still has the original tracks running through it. Much of Fort Worth, particularly the area we were in, has been kept very traditional so although the cattle pens were empty it was easy to imagine how they would have been when in full operation. Next stop was a huge horse barn with around 30 horses stabled in it. We got chatting to ... read more

It's Monday night and the stress of getting ready to leave for South America is growing. My list of things to do is pretty lengthy, but at least I'm making progress. Still, I only have tomorrow to do a ton of stuff -- some of it is pretty important. My itinerary is pretty well locked in now. About a 7-10 days in Iquitos (including four down river in the jungle) and 5-7 days in Cusco with a couple of days visiting Machu Picchu tucked in there followed by a day or two in Lima before flying back to the US. The only change might be leaving Iquitos a little early and heading to Cusco a couple of days early to visit one of the Sunday markets. I worry that the heat and humidity of Iquitos might ... read more

About 5 days to go until I head off to South America. My travel plans are starting to come together -- at least for the first half of the trip. I'll leave Wednesday morning and fly to Miami where I have a four hour layover and before catching a flight to Lima. After arriving at 9:45 pm, going through immigration, baggage, and customs should be done in about an hour. From there I'll head over to the LAN airline counter and check-in for my 4:20 am flight to Iquitos and the rainforest. That means about 4-5 hours waiting in the airport -- probably without sleep. Fortunately, they have a great food court, 24-hour internet access, and an excellent restaurant that looks out over the airport from above. I've spent the night in the airport a couple ... read more

Wow Friday was a FUN day!!! I was up before the chickens and on the road early. No traffic problems getting to the track in Cresson, TX. I spent the day with 50 or so Miata buddies turning laps on a 1.7 mile road course. They broke us down into novice, intermediate, and advanced so only people with similar skill levels were on the track at the same time. Since I’ve never driven at speed on a road course I obviously signed up as a novice. We had classroom time interspersed with track time. I had an instructor riding with me all day. First time out we learned about the handling and braking characteristics of our cars with slalom and braking drills and learned the layout of the track. Next time out the instructors did a ... read more
