Texas does not have a high reputation for art museums. Even for western art, the best known public collections are elsewhere. That probably accounts for how few people know that the state has a group of great museums in an unexpected place, Fort Worth. The city holds something called the Cultural District, with has five museums within ten blocks of each other. Three of them are art museums. Remarkably, each one focuses on different subjects, so they have no overlap. Equally remarkably, each one has a building from a notable architect. Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth I saw the Modern Art Museum first. It’s contained in a steel and concrete masterpiece from Tadao Ando, surrounded by a reflecting pool. Interior rooms have the white wall look ... read more

Last week, I was fortunate enough to attend Premier Designs National Convention in Fort Worth. I really enjoyed it, especially two of the speakers; Gary Smalley and Joni Eareckson Tada. I remember reading Joni's book as a young girl and was excited to see her in person. I loved that the overall theme of the conference wasn't on how to make the biggest profits, but how to build relationships and be the best you can be. During one of the breaks I went out to see the water gardens that are right next to the convention center. The pools were designed by a New York architect, Phillip Johnson, and have been there since 1974. There are three pools; the Quiet Pool, the Aerating Pool and the Active Pool. The biggest pool, the Active Pool, was ... read more

The main reason for my adding to the blog is that I have been asked about the winners of the cheesecake, cupcake, and cheeseburger contests! I have to say that Roxy is my favorite in both the cheesecake and cheeseburger category. I really didn't have a bad piece of cheesecake but I like theirs the best, especially the toffee heath bar! My second place was Stage Deli, and my least favorite was Lindy's. On cheeseburgers, Cozy's was my second favorite and Mother Burger my least favorite. As far as cupcakes, Magnolia Bakery won hands down. Their white on white was amazing and no one else even came close. In fact I couldn't even finish the one from Junior's. On my next stay in NY I decided I would never eat at the same place twice. There ... read more

Fort Worth Texas - I've made the long drive a couple of times. While I was in Fort Worth, I managed to find a great deal on a nice hotel room with a great location. The city is really an inexpensive place to visit. While I was there, I visited the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame and had my picture taken on a real live bull in the Fort Worth Stockyards. The bull, was like a grandpa bull. They put a couple of steps up to it's side and told me "It's Ok, climb on". He even had a Santa hat on his head. My brother swears that the pictures were photoshopped. I also found some of my greatest shopping deals ever at Grapevine. The town is full of malls and great places to shop, especially ... read more

1 Feb. woke up at 7.15am due to nature's call and thought I would check out the window. Not expecting (although I knew a cold cell was going to drop temps) for the ground to be covered with snow. Yikes! And the Ipod tells me it is not much better for a couple of days. Getting the train to Austin this arvo (I hope!) - wonder if there will be delays?... read more

Monday left the hotel Aloft ard 11.30am - found the massive bronze cattle herd on the Pioneer park opposite - very impressively large. Then over to Deeley Plaza again - where some conspiracy authors near the grasy knoll fence were selling their wares. One had interviewed other witnesses etc and had made 4 DVDs ($15 each - the set for $60) - the other had a publication with the JFK autopsy pix in it (used to work for the govt so its OK - otherwise ban on release for another 20 years??). Then down for the Trinity Rail over to Forth Worth - an hour. Walk to Sheraton down the road. Huge room with choice of beds. Then uptown to Sundance Square for wander around the shops - Retro Cowboy and one selling real cowboy boots ... read more

January 24, Monday Had to go to Ft Worth to take care of some final (I hope) business and while I was there I decided to check out the sites. Had done some homework and figured the best place to stay for me would be the Studio 6 in North Richland Hills. They have Suites with kitchenettes etc for $199 a week. And they are nice, clean and safe. From Downtown you go north a bit on I-35 and get off on 121 (Airport Frwy) to NE Loop820 going north and then West you get off at Holiday Lane Exit #21 and follow the feeder back East to the Studio 6. It seems a long way but only took me about 20 minutes in medium traffic. I drove out of downtown Ft Worth Sundance Square around ... read more

Visited an elderly friend of our hosts and also their daughter, both of who live locally. Visited Dallas Fort Worth today where they were hosting a cattle show. It was quite a bit warmer, so it was nice to walk around and see all the characters and shops. We completed the maze in about 17 minutes. Felt like big kids, but it was very enjoyable for us and for our hosts who decided that to watch would be more fun. Went for a traditional steak meal in the evening. ... read more

Feliz Ano Nuevo 2011 I guess she wasn't as crazed as I thought since we made it on the Miami flight and spent the New Year with champagne in business class once again, on our way back to the good old USA. Yay! Adios, Buenos Aires. It was fun!! Good to be back though. Note: This is for my Dad who said I didn't really finish out this trip saying we got on the flight and made it home. But I did say that in the previous entry, he thinks people only read the snippets available. ... read more
