You can't appreciate how big Texas is until you try to drive across it. I'm grateful that US 59 wasn't interstate for most of the way but it was still long day of driving. I made good time driving 70 MPH (legally) via Nacogdoches, Lufkin, and Houston to a nice camping ground on the shore of Laxe Texana. I had just enough time to take a stroll along a nature trail to look for aligators but I didn't see any. There was only the odd sign that said "Swim at Your Own Risk" and "Please Don't Feed The Aligators". This made me think that you would be in double trouble if you went in for a swim and an aligator ate you. ... read more
