Main Street Bonham Texas
Main street downtown business area for Bonham TexasBonham Texas is a small town in the northern part of the state. Not a whole lot in or around the town. Biggest employer is the Veteran Administration Medical Center which serves veterans in Oklahoma and Texas. The Sam Rayburn Library and Museum is about a quarter mile from the downtown square on SR 56. Rayburn was Speaker of the House of Representatives. The library is normally open Mon-Fri 9-5. Also in the area, about 2 miles west of town on SR 56 is the Sam Rayburn House Museum. Open Tues-Sat for a shorten number of hours. Check with the facility. The court house sits in the very middle of downtown. Not a lot of business in downtown as many buildings are deserted. There was a flea market open just a block from the Sam Rayburn Museum the week end we were in town. If you happen to be out driving this might be a small town to drive to and spend an hour of two at one of the museums. Nothing else much attracted our eye. On SR 56 at the city limits was a restaurant but outside that one we did not find others restaurants in town except for
Court House Bonham Texas
The court house is located in downtown Bonham and occupies the center potion of the downtown area fast food locations. Two of the three auto dealerships had closed, thus a sign of the times as this is written.
About 10 miles southwest of Bonham, is a small community of Whitewright. A few years ago there was an effort underway to renew downtown and turn the area into a tourist location. We paid a visit to the small town to see what had taken place and we are sad to report that earlier efforts have for the most park failed. Many of the downtown stores that were included in the renewal effort are now closed and for rent. The one positive building was the renovation of the old downtown movie theater. That theater is now showing first run movie son a limited schedule, like one movie showing a night. The renovations at the theater are quite nice complete with old time popcorn machine and candy counter in the lobby. This is a small town small theater nicely renovated. One of two small cafes close by the theater however outside that the downtown area is struggling. There is a nice city park about a block form downtown. Interesting pace to drive through but not a lot to stay
Sam Rayburn Library
The Sam Rayburn Library is located about 1/4 miles on SR 56 from downtown Bonham. Open to the public for limited number of hours each week. Check at site or call ahead. for.
As you leave this area and head back toward McKinney you will pass a sign on the road that directs you to the Dallas Sky Diving Club facility. It's only a mile off the road. Go there and watch the sky divers which jump on days there is good weather. There is also a snack bar where you can get a good hamburger. The day we were there the jumpers jumped about every thirty to 45 minutes. If you would like you can also jump as they will sell you a jump along with instructions.
