Finally we made it to Texas even though TX is Summer's home state. One thing is for sure, not everything is bigger in Texas ( just kidding ) We visited Austin over Thanksgiven weekend, it was quite cold to be honest. Went to a longhorn game, visited 6th st, went to get some of the best bbq in the entire state of TX. The Salt Lick Bbb joint is awesome and unique, and the drive is quite nice as well. I am going to let the pictures do the talking for me.... read more

Our Two Day in Austin, Texas Austin was our next stop and it was the one city in Texas that I was most looking forward to visiting, mainly because it was one of the two cities to which many musicians displaced from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina settled in. It is the capital city of Texas, but unlike any of the other Texas towns we have visited on our drive in that it has a lively and vibrant and people-filled downtown area. It seems to be where all the Texans who don’t want to be Texans go! Austin defines itself as the ‘Live Music Capital’ of the World and there is certainly an incredible amount of live music happening on East 6th Street. There must be 50 bars along that strip nearly all of which feature ... read more

August 7th, 2013 10:30 pm. CDT Day 29 Woke up at 6:15 am, took car cover off, I saw that the radiator was too far front of hood so I screwed the hood rod to pull the radiator back toward the hood to align it to the hood. Went and ate breakfast, when returning to our room I noticed the radiator was leaking, checked the overflow tube and it was not leaking, checked the hoses and the top hose was leaking, had to tighten clamp, problem solved. This leak was due to adjusting the radiator to hood. Our destination today was Austin, TX. 179 miles, we arrived at motel at 1:30 pm. I was stationed here at Bergstrom AFB in 1957, the year we married. After unloading car into the motel, we headed for the Hartgrove's ... read more

San Antonio has been a favorite vacation spot for many years. We began taking Jeffrey there when he was just a youngster - maybe 7 or 8 years old. At the time, we were excited to find an amusement park that adults could enjoy (rides) and the kids also liked (character and music shows); and it was within reasonable driving disance. All through the years, Six Flags Fiesta Texas has met the mark. Even after they were no longer owned by Gaylord/Opery Land, they maintained top quality music shows with really amazing talent. When we began planning our trip for Jeff, we were excited to also include our sister, and new Okie, Terry! Terry just moved to OKC in November having lived in New York for the past 40 plus years. So, we have been having ... read more

I added a lot of people to my blog subscription list. If you are receiving this blog and do not want to get it, then feel free to unsubscribe. My feelings won't be hurt. So after planning and thinking about this trip for close to a year, it has finally come time to go. Last summer I went to Guatemala City to volunteer at UPAVIM Montessori Children's Center which is a Montessori pre-school in in the impoverished La Esperanza area on the south side of Guatemala City. The school is funded and supported by UPAVIM which is a women's ... read more

As a traveller, you know a place is a favourite when you make a return visit and find yourself just as enamoured with said place the second time around. For me, Austin is that kind of place. Not long after visiting, I also quickly realized it’s one of my favourite American cities. What took me to the capital of Texas this time was, of all reasons, a festival celebrating television — something you’d expect more in LA. Had ATX 2013 been elsewhere, I may or may not have attended, but it gave me a proper excuse for another Austin sojourn. How can you not love a place where the waffles are shaped like Texas? In four short days, when I wasn’t attending festival events, me and my better half basked in the welcome June heat, explored ... read more

In addition to enjoying a few nights of Austin's great music scene we followed Anna's recommendation and drove about an hour outside of Austin to see Hamilton Pool Nature Preserve (aka Hamilton Cave). We understood that it was an area that had an incredible pool for swimming and an interesting rock formation. The weather was iffy, but today was our only chance to see it. The sky was soon alive with lightening and rain but we continued our "take to the waters" quest when Karena showed no fear braving the weather. I, however, was a bit more reticent, but went along. After 10-15 minutes hiking down a creek valley we thought that we should take some shelter from the downpour. It didn't take long to realize that our "dry" spot was flooding fast so we sprinted ... read more

Geo: 30.3037, -97.7696Mad Dash Deer Dodging across Texas to Big BendAfter we left Austin, stopped by Llano to pickup some very important items. Guess what? Cannot remember what they are!We chose a new route === drove to Mason then on to Medina and took Hwy 190 to Iraan and from there got on I-10. It was a very good choice because the 18 wheelers were not in evidence as they are on I-10. Traffic for the most part was light and we made good time.Saw wild turkeys, deer and armadillos on this journey. What a treat! Of course as it got dark, we began to worry about keeping a deer from running out and ruining our whole day! Honked the horn to alert them to our passing by and made it without incident.Got to Marathon about ... read more
