This is my first blog entry! Right now I am trying to finish preparing everything for my flight to Paris tomorrow. It seems like there is so much work to do just to get there; from applying to study abroad, to buying health insurance, applying for scholarships, booking the flight, getting my French visa, packing, and planning, planning, planning!!! It's enough to give someone a headache. But here I am, at the culmination of so much work. I can't believe it's finally here. As I look forward to my journey, I know that I cannot prepare for everything, in fact, as we may see, there will be lots of unexpected obstacles and challenges that appear. However, I am confident that I will be able to face these challenges head on. So I guess that means I'm ... read more

16 days on the road, ranging from Austin heat to glacial ice, hot tubs to mountain hiking. How do you pack all you need in two pieces of luggage? No problem, I'm married to the absolute Queen of Packers. All I have to do is lift and carry the darn things for the next two weeks. ... read more

OK, so it's time to start getting serious about a travel blog, as this will probably be my main means of communicating back to the New World. And here we go: HOLY CRAP I'm leaving soon. There is one week left at the 9-5, then another week until the movers come to put my stuff in storage. There's a two day buffer zone to clean up any loose ends, then I head out to North Carolina on May 28th for a visit with the parents. I'll be living out of a suitcase for a week and a half until June 8th, at which point I pack up my backpack and head over the pond to Dublin, Ireland. I've already setup my first WWOOF farm stay in Ireland, and I'll be heading to County Claire immediately to ... read more

I need to write this every day, Its all got a bit blurred. Saturday we got up and, like, so did some stuff. The photos on this page are a bit jumbled, some are from the day before but no matter. I just sat and stared at the screen, eventually memories of Saturday came to me (short term, erm, thingummy…..you know). We made a brisk start to the day by popping down to a bar called Bagpipes, as you do, at 8am. Bagpipes is a classy bar in a corner of a shopping mall, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Scottish-themed pub before but it’s good to try new things and even better if you can fit them into your day before breakfast. The Scottishness of the bar was demonstrated by waitresses wearing tartan mini-skirts ... read more

It is my fathers birthday tomorrow, August 22, 2008. He will be 56. I have been in Buda and Austin for a while now. I was off of Fitzhugh road earlier today helping/learning about wiring a detached garage with him. I decided to use this summer as a money making time (Omni Southpark) as well as a learning period for electrical work. I feel like I have gained a great wealth of knowledge from my father about the skilled trade of an electrician during the summer of 2008. I go on calls with him whenever I can. However, it is time for the first semester for my senior year to begin. The beginning of the end. That is of my B.B.A. I don't beleive I made the blog that I have travelled to Oklahoma during 2008 ... read more

So, I made it safely back home after 19 days amongst my European brothers. After powering through a father unpleasant final 48 hours I have hopefully slept through my jet lag, but time shall tell. Here is what is going to happen. Over the next few days I am going to add my on the road writings to this and attempt to keep them just as they are. Bear in mind you will be getting some odd riffings from napkins, loose pieces of paper, and late night ramblings, but that makes it really fun. Please, forgive the language at the onset. But now, first thing is first. After spending three weeks in Europe I have discovered a relationship I need to mend. That's right, for my first act after returning to the US, I am going ... read more

So, first off, my dad is awesome. Now, let me backtrack to clarify. Last year I apparently made some of the fine folk with airport security mad, because somehow, my brand new suitcase ended up before making it to London. Long story short, I had to buy a new one. To avoid the temptation to over pack I bought a slightly smaller case. I didn't realize how much smaller. So, as I stood there this morning debating between bringing a second pair of shoes or my toothbrush with me, my father swooped in, and bought me a larger suitcase. Why? BECAUSE HE KICKS ASS!!!! Speed bump one cleared, should be nothing but smooth sailing from here on out.... read more

So, a new chapter in the illustrious history of the Big Jim travel-blog begins. For those returning, thank you for keeping the faith. For those new, welcome to the family. To begin, this years trip goes a bit beyond the British Isles, please, allow me to give you the birds eye. At around 6 pm Texas time, I will be getting on a plane and flying to foggy London town, which I suspect shall be a bit light on the fog and will most likely be quite lovely and sunny, but lovely, sunny London doesn't quite have a ring of truth to it, so I go with the convenient lie. Whooray! I arrive on Friday around noon, London time, and get myself settled in the "lovely" Imperial Hotel, as I covered last year words like "Royal" ... read more
