We were looking for something a little different than what we have been doing with a little less hiking. We decided to go to Bay Mountain Park & Planetarium. We were a little disappointed in the sanctuary because we were unable to view any otters, red fox, or bobcats. When we approached the wolve enclosure we saw nothing, more disappointment. We kept walking, viewed some deer, hawks, and owls. We found this silly deer walking the fence line mouthing every piece of the fence he could reach as if someone had covered it with peanut butter because he surely loved the fence. We saw a deer eating with squirrels and a tiny chipmunk scavenging for food below the feeder. The chipmunk was so cute it would fill its’ cheeks so full and scurry off only for ... read more

Thankfully we gained an hour today driving because we used it. We drove from Atlanta, GA to Manchester, TN, then hiked the Encloser Trail at Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park. We were a bit slower due to my recently hurt ankle (tendon) and the doggies (ok really old Mandy). The trail was marked as moderate, but in many locations, it was very treacherous and sketchy. If you would have tripped, you easy could have fallen to your death. There was one location that Daisy made me literally climb a mountain with Nates assistance of pushing my ass as I climbed with pain in my ankle. ? The trail contained the remains of an old stone fort, 3 waterfalls, a dam, and a field of beautiful wildflowers. You think we would have stopped here, but we ... read more

Leaving Gulf Shores! Woke up to a cloudy day for our first half of our travels home. One last morning walk on the beach with Leo. The winds and surf had picked up since yesterday. Not too many out on the beach early. Just a few walkers and another dog getting a morning walk. Storms expected along our route home. We packed up our belongings into the truck to head home. We ate an assortment of leftovers for breakfast. Spaghetti, pancake sandwich, pasta with shrimp. One last check to make sure we didn’t leave anything behind. The truck was loaded and we headed out of Morgantown. Just north of Gulf Shore we started getting the rain and storms. There were some really good claps of thunder and lightning strikes to the ground. We didn’t run into ... read more

9/30/21 This will be the last travel entry for a while as we are stopping at our daughters house for a couple of weeks. During that time, I will post a final entry summing up this trip. Thanks for reading. Last night we were in Cave City, KY, just outside of Mammoth Cave National Park. We were up early and on the road at 8 AM and 67 degrees. We were headed for Asheville, NC and decided we would take the scenic roads most of the way. We drove through A LOT of small towns including places like Summer Shade, Marrow Bone, Waterview, Burkesville, Twin Lakes, Albany, Monticello, Frazer, Bronston, Pine Knot, and Strunk, all in Kentucky and then through Rocky Top and Knoxville in Tennessee. Most of these small towns have a lot in common. ... read more

Memphis Another great time with Aaron & Patrick on their road drip - Today we were in Memphis. What fun and such a delight to see the March of the Ducks at the Peabody Hotel. Back in the 1930s Frank Shutt, General Manager of The Peabody, and a friend, returned from a weekend hunting trip to Arkansas. The men had a little too much Tennessee sippin' whiskey, and thought it would be funny to place some of their live duck decoys in the beautiful Peabody fountain. Three small English call ducks were selected as "guinea pigs," and the reaction was nothing short of enthusiastic. Thus began a Peabody tradition which was to become internationally famous.® In 1940, Bellman Edward Pembroke, a former circus animal trainer, offered to help with delivering the ducks to the fountain each ... read more

Nashville was named after American Revolutionary war hero Francis Nash. Our tour started along Printer’s Alley. At the beginning of the 20th century, Printer’s Alley was home to a thriving publishing industry. The area was home to two large newspapers, ten print shops, and thirteen publishers. During Prohibition print shops ran a collection of bars that became the city’s not-so-secret secret bar scene. We then moved to the part of Printers Alley District known in the late nineteenth century as the Men’s Quarter, named as a result of the many gambling parlors and saloons located there. Any women who valued their reputation would not dare venture into this part of Printer’s Alley. We heard about The Maxwell House Hotel (where Maxwell Coffee got it’s name) and the separate entrance that was established for ladies to enter ... read more

Are you liking your stay here at Red Bay so far? We hope so. We have been enjoying ourselves. If not, we won’t be here much longer. Have to get up very, very early in the morning to have our RV at Bay Diesel for its new coolant reservoir, new clamps and new hoses if needed. YAWN! So just sleep in your clothes….makes things easier in the morning.Of course, Lulu is way ahead of all of us. She doesn’t wear any clothes…….you know why (no body). She just adjusts her hair ribbon and she’s up and ready to go. Lucky Lulu! I think I left off talking about our new toppers. If not…just bear with me. Remember the gusty winds that came up and had our new toppers (heavy fabric over our slideouts) billowing up like ... read more

We had taken a trip north to help Dad with his taxes in late March. As was expected, there was snow on our last day there. But after a pleasant week, we headed back to Alabama and time to mow the grass and straighten up and clean up from winter (such as it was there.) Then we heard from dear friends Carol and Ned Gatzke in WI. There were going to be in Ohio to see family and friends; would we be there. Dang! We had just left. So we made plans on meeting somewhere half way for a few days of camping. We eventually settled on the Land Between the Lakes region of Kentucky/Tennessee. We headed north while they would be heading in the general direction of home in WI, just meandering a bit more ... read more

Tennessee was cloudy and cooler today. We headed into Knoxville for a walking tour of downtown and some shopping. We had a nice lunch at an outdoor patio. Leo was entertained by the people and other pups and learned to chill and relax while we ate. We went to Knox Whiskey Works for a tasting flight of an assortment of beverages. Sriracha got to do some city driving to our next stop, Ijams Park. We did a loop to check out the trails along the river boardwalk. The rock formations show bending of the layers of rock along the river as well as some caves. Leo was happy to be hiking again! We took a quick stop at another park for some geocaching and then we headed back to our Knoxville headquarters to watch some of ... read more

Today started with a cloudy cool day. We took a short drive and began the day with a trip to Hammer's in Clinton to see if we could find any shopping deals. We had a quick lunch and then it was out to do some more hiking. We headed to House Mountain Wildlife Area. This was the park recommended by our waiter last night. It was his favorite park when he was a kid. The trail starts at the base of the mountain. It is a standalone outcropping just east of Knoxville. The trail was rocky and had water flowing in places from all the rain yesterday and overnight. We hiked up the west trail that was rocky and steep in places. Leo led the way up the trail. At the top there was a view ... read more
