The Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee is the most visited National Park in the United States. But, that doesn't mean it's the most expensive place to travel. As a matter of fact, the Smoky Mountains may have more Things that are FREE to See, than any other National Park. I have taken my mother to the area for her birthday a number of times, as it is only a 5 hour drive. One of our favorite things to do is visit the Mingus Mill, as we are driving across the mountain. The mill is free to visit and it's just across a small bridge from the parking lot. This works out great, for anyone who can't do a lot of hiking. And of course, my mom loves to buy some of the corn meal they make ... read more

The trip is officially over now time to make the long journey back home. It is always bittersweet at the end. As we look back and see all that we accomplished and the memories that we made.. We see that we are very lucky and fortunate. We always love our alone time but love spending time with the family and getting to take them places with us. Nothing warms my heart more than seeing my niece and nephew smile and hear about their favorite parts. With one trip ending its time to book our next trip! Where to go?? ♥ Ems... read more

Today we decided to spend ALL day driving through the Smokies! I will say make sure you wear comfortable shoes, clothing, bring snacks and some water. You will want to get out of you car to explore a bit.. There is also some visitors centers (if you want some maps or souvenirs) and a few places with restrooms. We drove through to Cades Cove. It is an 11-mile one way loop and I highly suggest this! Be prepared to see some wildlife, and I'm not just talking about birds and squirrels! We saw: turkey, deer and BEARS (yes, plural!!). A total of 5 bears in one day! Now when someone sees a bear everyone stops and I do mean everyone. If you are wanting to see this place with little traffic I would suggest going early ... read more

This day we started off going to Uber Gatinburg. And with that said we so much more time to explore all of its attractions! From indoor ice skating to sky lifts to the top of the mountain. Their is so much to do here. We rode and back down the Tram up the mountain, a must do, to get a full look at the city and The Great Smoky Mountains. After mid morning we wanted to take the kids to the Ripleys Believe It or Not Aquarium. This place was great and the kids loved it! From dress up costumes to a living experience of penguins. I would not recommend eating here because it is very expensive, but the food is very good. After we left we headed back for one more trip to the candy ... read more

We all set off to Smoky Mountain Outdoors white water rafting. Some of us would be going on the upper level and the others would be going on the lower with the kids. Again we chose this place because of reviews and safety measures. Now driving to this place was an adventure! It is about 30-40 minutes east of Gatlinburg and you pretty much take all back roads. Now I am great with directions and I got lost twice.. So pay attention! It had the right amount of rapids and downtime I think. I have gone white water rafting 3 times before and they were all in West Virginia, and these compared. We even got to hope over board and swim for about 5 minutes. After getting lost one more time on our way back we ... read more

Today we set off into 2 groups, because one of the kiddos was not old enough, to go zip-lining! This place was AMAZING!! I can not say enough about CLIMB Works Zipline Canopy Tours. From their A+ safety gear and lines to the tour guides. Everybody had an amazing time! The tour lasted about 2.5 hours and it was the perfect amount of time I think. The only downfall was that we could not all be together (each person has to be over the age of 7). By the time it was time to go back and the resort and change out, we decided to go swimming in the pool and hot tub. The pool was kind of chilly, crazy since it was middle of July, but we got use to it. We even had time to ... read more

On this trip we decided to take my husbands brother's and sister's families. 2 cars + 11 people = VERRYYY long and eventful road trip! But I would change it for anything. We have so many jokes between all of us now. We checked into our hotel room, Mountain Loft Resort, well I should say it was actually a town home. With 3 kids this place worked out perfect! 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 2 kitchens, 2 living rooms, 3 porches and 2 fireplaces. Wooo, mouth full! We spent the evening exploring the grounds, the pool was awesome with the views of The Great Smoky Mountains. And then we went out to eat a place called 'No way Jose'. Now, since we are from Texas and we are partial to our Mexican food (we are Mexican food ... read more

I had been anticipating our trip to Gatlinburg since our arrival in Pigeon Forge. The reason - Tennessee’s only legal Moonshine still. The only challenge - since it was Sunday, there were no samples, or sales, until noon. So, we had time for a leisurely breakfast at, where else???.... a pancake house. Yummy, and fast. We headed out on the short drive to Gatlinburg by 10:15. The trip was a short five miles, but is was a beautiful, if short drive. We elected to drive into town and park rather than park at the visitor center as was recommended. From the visitor center, you could take a free shuttle, but after our Dollywood shuttle challenge, we thought it safer to keep the FJ within walking distance. As we entered town, it was reminiscent of a small ... read more

Today was another day in the Great Smoky Mountains. I spent quite a bit of time deciding where. The park is huge, and much of it is located away from roads. I eventually chose the Roaring Fork auto tour, because it has a wide variety of experiences in a small area. The first challenge with Roaring Fork is finding it. The road first goes to Gatlinburg. This town is a miniature Pigeon Forge, with a similar range of cheesy entertainment and shopping options. The big difference with Pigeon Forge is that all of this is wrapped in pseudo-Bavarian architecture. The town wants to look like a quaint village in the Alps. The issue for me is that it’s not in the Alps, it’s a tourist trap in eastern T... read more

We've made it to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, for Keith's National Marine Education Association conference. We're sharing a room with Bob, who Keith knows from past conferences, but Tessa and I get to meet him when he kindly drags himself out of bed on our arrival after midnight. We all fall into our beds, looking forward to moving into conference mode and checking out Gatlinburg the next day. Well we're into full culture shock now after Central America. Gatlinburg is the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited National Park in the States. This is touristville for Americans and they certainly go all out to entertain. The town is bursting with all sorts of family entertainment options, there's a huge (2 storey) replica of the gorilla from King Kong, famous cars from films and ... read more
