Recently I visited the great smoky mountains in the month of October to see the fall colors. Its one of the most visited national parks in USA and I really recommend every one to visit the smokies. It lies on the border of Tennesse and north carolina and spread across hundreds of miles. The best time to visit the smoky would be the fall season to see the beautiful colors of the fall. One should atleast have two complete days to visit the smokies. Be patient with the traffic as its the most visited national park. I think the maximum number of people visiting the smoky mountains would be Indians.
Plan to see the fall colors, sceinic drives, hiking, trekking, fishing, waterfalls etc in the smokies. Its not a place where you can find a entry gate and then roam across, Its spread over a vast area and one should be ready to explore the place.
We entered from the Tennesse side as we travelled from warsaw Indiana. Either you stay in the cabins near the park or the hotels of Pigeon forge or Gatlinburg. We stayed in Pigeon forge and travelled to the smokies which is around 25
miles from there. You can visit the the following places.
Roaring fork, clingmans dome, clodes cave, grotto falls trail, sugarlands visitor centre etc. Please restric your visit and plan in advance what you want to see. The traffic would be really too much as most of the attractions are sceinic drives and people would drive slow stop at intervals and take the photographs and enjoy the fall colors. We restricted our trip to the clingmans dome, Roaring fork and Sugarland visitor centre. Its highly recommended to visit the sugarlands visitor center if you are visiting smokies for the first time.
Try to visit the clingmans dome, its at a height and have a Parking, store and restroom facilities which is very difficult to find in the smokies. The dome is at a height and when the sky is clear in summers one can see several states from top, we went in october and it was cold and cloudy there and was not able to see anything from top. have some nice photographs there.
Visit the roarking fork, its basically a sceinic drive and really takes a lot of time to complete the tour as you will be
driving slow and stopping in between to take the photographs and go for some hikings. At many places parking would be there and you can stop and go for trails/hiking to see the old houses in the jungles or mountains, ready to see some bears on the way. fall colors will really amaze you time to time.
Visit the downtown of Gatliburg, it's really a happening place, you can visit ripley's believe it or not museum, moonshine, sky lift etc. Also plan for some adventure sports in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge like the Ogo outdoor gravity park in Pigeon forge or the skylift in Gatlinburg.
