Happy Birthday, Lisa and Sara! We spent two days in Chattanooga on the way to our next project, and as many areas as we’ve seen, this is one of the most stunning. We spent the first day driving around the downtown area, and along the river, and then we took the incline railway to the top of Lookout Mountain. Marvin and Jackie traveled with us, but they only stayed one day, as they used to live near here, and have seen the sights. Of the three major sites we had planned, they most wanted to do the incline railway, and that’s how we decided to do it first! There were many times we were viewing the area through the roof!! The railway has been running since 1895, and is not only for sightseeing, but also ... read more

On the 14th after breakfast, we went out to get pictures developed & bought a black felt hat for rainy weather; then we took the sigh seeing car for the Chickamauga Battlefield. This we enjoyed very much in spite of the rain. After lunch Will took a little nap & I wrote several cards. We started for Lookout Mt. The ride up the incline was wonderful, so steep with large rocks on either side. After reaching the top, we bought a few cards but because of the rain and fog we could not see anything. In the evening we went to the station to see the Divens who were on their way to Orlando, wrote more cards & a letter and went to bed. (The little hills of Missionary Ridge are 700 ft. high and Lookout ... read more

On my drive back to Atlanta and my week of meetings, I stopped at LookOut Mountain home to Ruby Falls and Rock City (located in Chattanooga, TN_. You can't miss it because there are signs about every other mile for about a 200 miles in every direction telling you that you must stop! They did their work and I decided to stop and take a look. Ruby Falls was quite the surprise...its motto is "200 million years in the making". Ruby Falls is an indoor 145 foot waterfall located about 1120 feet below the top of LookOut Mountain. Pretty dramatic and with plenty of force. The water comes from the roof inside a cave. They're not entirely sure how the water gets to the Falls but rain or shine the Falls are working although there is ... read more

Karen and I returned to Chattanooga, January 7-9, 1983, and added another dimension to our understanding of the area. We visited Lookout Mountain and its attractions, Rock City and Ruby Falls. Rock City is just that, boulders with a path winding through them. The walk climaxes at Lover's Leap with a panoramic view. It was opened to the public in 1932. Ruby Falls was discovered by Leo Lambert and named after his wife. It is located within a cave inside the mountain a quarter of a mile beneath Point Park. An elevator lowers people to the cave. The falls originates underground and flows into the Tennessee River. Point Park, perched at the northern tip of Lookout Mountain, is part of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. Our time at Chickamauga Battlefield causes us to associate ... read more

Obfuscator writes: We left our motel in Dalton, and drove straight to Chickamauga Battlefield. By the time the battle of Chickamauga began, Chattanooga was already in Union control, but Chickamauga was basically an attempt to break out and into the deep South. The failure of General Rosecrans at this battle led to the Union being forced to retreat to Chattanooga, where the south laid siege to them. Of course, it was sort of messed up battle on both sides, since Bragg failed to actually make his numeric superiority work enough for him to actually thoroughly defeat the Union, and allowed them to fall back to Chattanooga, which was a logistically important town for both sides. Anyway, Chickamauga is far less popular a destination than Gettysburg, or probably Antietam or Mannassass. Nevertheless, they have a really nice ... read more

Obfuscator writes! Normally we write these things the day after. It ensures that we get a full summary of everything that happens of interest. Today however, I am so confident that the rest of this day will hold nothing of interest, that I have begun writing the entry at 4:30 in the afternoon. We left FDR State Park, and were planning on meeting up with the same army friends for a bit in the morning. To kill a bit of time, we drove to Warm Springs, which was only about 15 miles away, so that we could see FDR's Little White House, the home he had built there when he was first elected president. Apparently he had been coming there for a while, to treat his polio with hot springs, and liked it. It's also where ... read more

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. And now my New Mexico 2007 sojourn must also wrap up. The last few days have been an enjoyable way to finish an exciting and informative trip. I’ve had several RVing “firsts” in the past few days. The first was in Vicksburg - when I pulled into the campground where I planned to stay only to learn they were FULL (didn’t have reservations). But as it turns out, they were nice enough to recommend another park very close by, and even called to make sure they had room for me. They had plenty of spots and it turned out to be a MUCH NICER place. The 2nd “first” was my first night staying in a Wal-mart parking lot. Thursday I met a friend for ... read more
