Friday, 5 October, 2012 We did leave Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area by the western entrance instead of the steep, winding eastern way. It was a pretty drive, but without the stress of those hills and curves. We drove south on Hwy 127 through Crossville and Pikeville. We turned east just before Soddy-Daisy and got to Chester Frost County Park around 2-ish. We had called earlier to see how crowded they were and to see if we could reserve a spot, but no to reservations and they were filling fast. So we were relieved to find they still had 14 spots available when we arrived. We set up and relaxed a while after calling Sara to let her know we had arrived. We had planned to have Sara and Trevor come to the ... read more

I have listed this day as Chattanooga, TN but we start out in Georgia from Lookout Mountain to Cloudland Canyon. Today was sunny and clear with a slight early morning chill in the low 60s. Perfect for our hiking plans for today. After a breakfast of an egg, ham and cheese puff pastry with a side of fruit and blueberry coffee cake, (and alas, no unsweetened plain yogurt to accompany the fresh fruit), we set off with a little picnic to discover the beauty of Cloudland Canyon State Park. The park is about 25 minutes south of Lookout Mountain and the Chanticleer Inn. Be sure to get a map and ask specific questions to locate the paths down to the waterfalls! The signage is infrequent and misleading in this park but the 1200 steps down to ... read more

Today started off great. After a late sleep and breakfast at the hotel, I headed up the mountain to Ruby Falls. Ruby Falls is the largest waterfall within a cave. In an hour-long tour, we learned the history of the falls, how they were discovered, and saw many spectacular rock formations 260 feet inside Lookout Mountain. The more colorful rock formations were creatively named, such as potato chip, elephant's foot, tobacco, steak & potatoes, etc. The tour culminated in the actual Ruby Falls (named for the wife of the man who discovered them). From Ruby Falls, I headed to the top of the mountain to Rock City. At Rock City, I toured the many gardens, including a gnome underpass, and walked across a swinging bridge to Lover's Leap and the peak of Lookout Mountain, where 7 ... read more

May 21 - Saturday - Chattanooga Day 2 Morning - Saturday in Chattanooga. Just paid for another day here at the Knights Inn and will go to see the Chicamagua and Chattanooga battlefields and Lookout Mountain today. It is going to be 90 today here so guess I had better get moving and do that before the heat of the day. Evening -Good day today. Explored the battle of Chickamauga site, and the battle of Chattanooga sites. I especially enjoyed Lookout Mountain. I drove up instead of taking the incline railway at $14. There was metered parking at Point Park where the civil war site is at. I used my National Parks Pass to get in. There was a fairly good program on the battle next door for $8.00 (Senior rate $7.00) Afterwards I tried to ... read more

Friday May 20 4:40 Pm Arrived in Chattanooga after a pleasant drive through lovely hills. Stopped at the Tennessee visitor center as for some reason you go from Tennessee into Georgia and then back into Tennessee again. Got lots of good info there but was disappointed as they didn't have wireless internet. I decided I would take care of renting a room first but found out they were scarce. Seems like recent bad weather plus a Stupid baseball game being played here have filled up all the rooms . Spent two very hot hours looking for a room. I finally rented a Suite at the Knights Inn on Shallowford Road North of I-75 for $70.30. As it was a very hot day I decided just heck with it and I rented the stupid room and have ... read more

Well believe it or not in the five days that we were in Georgia we did not make it into Atlanta, but Bob did decide to take a daytrip into Chattanooga. We took April and Gabriel for a day out.We got a late start and all that we managed to do was see the famed Chattanooga Choo Choo, and we took a ride down to the waterfront on the electric bus system. Chattanooga is a beautiful city but I think that it would have been a lot nicer if it wasn't so cold. This trip was taken just before the blizzard.... read more
