27 JUNE 2009 Saturday
Left this morning about 10:30am pulled into a motel at 12:30am. The goal for the day was to get a picture by a Ziebach County sign for the ABCs of Touring. This lead me on the best ride of the trip. The second goal was to get a picture of the MN state line sign. I love little towns and this route through SD was full of them. Starting the day in SW North Dakota I am heading for the Blue Bunny factory in LeMars IA it has an ice cream shop that is open until 10:30PM.
Again most of the day was great riding weather. More tag with rain and wind. Best gas mileage today for the trip. Over 53 MPG. Had a strong wind at my back most of the day.
As the little highway I was traveling on crossed the MO river there was this really neat bridge. I had not seen cars for miles although there appeared to be a lot of boats and fishermen in the area of this bridge. I crossed the bridge and waited, no cars, so I turned around and stopped on the bridge and took
a couple pictures. The XL Forum has a thread going of pictures of your bike on a bridge.
Saw as many bikes as I did cars, but for the most part today I was the only one on the road for miles. It was really nice. I plotted a waypoint everytime I saw a pay at the pump station. I will be more at ease next time I am running in this neck of the woods if I know where I can get gas.
I was taken back by how much this part (SE) of SD was just like KS. When I ran across a bunch of Laura Ingalls Wilder stuff it was just like part of KS. The first sighting was when I turned onto US14 east and it was labeled as the Laura Ingalls Wilder Historical Highway. The Ingalls moved a lot. I found that out last year when I visited their house in rural lower central KS. Papa Ingalls must have been a really bad farmer because it appears that he could not make a living anywhere, OK, KS, MO, IA, WI, MN, SD, or NE. My second Ingalls sighting was when I traveled through
De Smet SD. A sign offered free LIW tours and it had one the houses they lived on display. I rode by, everything was closed but I took a couple pictures. On the way out of town there was a sign for a LIW memorial and pageant, I didn’t stop. This is something to investigate more fully on another trip.
Time was slipping and soon the sun was down. Contruction on the I-29 made sure that I would not reach the Blue Bunny factory by 10:30. I had to back track 10 miles on the interstate to get to the MN line as the one I was planning on taking was closed. However because of the detour I ran across the Little Village Farm, quaint. It had a round barn of 2 which is what caught my eye to begin with. If you ever have the chance to tour inside a big round barn do it. Its amazing. I pulled over and took some pictures even though it was getting dark. The sign says its “Open April through October by Chance or Appointment”. Something else to visit on another trip.
At this point I know I am writing
off Blue bunny for another trip.
