We had reserved 2 nights in Keystone because there were several things in the area we wanted to see. The first thing on our agenda for the day was to go to Mount Rushmore. Mama had been there before with Daddy but this was the first time for me.
The drive out to Mount Rushmore was pretty. It was interesting seeing it in person after only seeing it in pictures and on travel show for years. We saw the presidents then went through the visitors center and watched a video on the constructions. I was more impressed with Crazy Horse than I was with Mount Rushmore.
After leaving Mount Rushmore we took Hwy 16A out of town. This road is a pigtail road with 3 tunnels which frame Mount Rushmore when going through the tunnels. We only did about 5 miles of the road before turning back and heading back to Keystone. We were able to go through all three tunnels.
We headed north out of Keystone to Bear Country. This is a place I would definitely go back to again. It is a drive thru wildlife area with animals
that are common to the area. They have a section with nothing but bears running loose. I have never seen so many bears at one time. We counted about 50 bears that we could see then there were more that were in caves we could not see. We drove through the park twice just to see the bears again. They also have a zoo area where the baby bears are kept. This was the smallest I have ever seen a baby bear.
We left Bear Country and stopped to eat lunch at Taco Bell. Mama went to the restroom and came back to the table laughing. She had accidentally gone into the men’s restroom instead of the women.
After lunch, we headed to Wall, South Dakota to see Wall Drug Store. This is another place I have seen and heard about on travel shows and wanted to see in person. It was nothing like I was expecting. It is a shopping mall with several stores under 1 roof. They had a little bit of everything there.
When we were finished looking around at Wall Drug Store we went back to Mount Rushmore. They have a ceremony every
evening about dark. A ranger gave a talk about Mount Rushmore, then they had a lowering the flag ceremony and a light show of Mount Rushmore following the ceremony.
