Started day with breakfast at the day cafe / night bar. Good breakfast and we had discounted from hotel. Then off fairly early for a packed day of fun.
• Bear Country USA -
https://www.bearcountryusa.com- drive through/walk through sanctuary. Very well ran and the babies were the best to watch. Being there first thing in the morning was a very good idea.
• 1880's Train -
https://www.1880train.com- I made reservations and paid for tickets online ahead of time. This made it pretty easy to check in and pick up our tickets in Keystone, SD. Nice train ride over to Hill City. Not near as scenic as some other train rides but the staff gave lots of very informative information about the area. During the layover in Hill City we had lunch at a little cafe a short walk from the station. Then nice peaceful ride back. My Dad found this a good nap time.
• After the ride we needed to stretch so did a wander through Keystone, SD. Lots of little shops and things to see / do. We stopped for ice cream while Dave ran back where we had parked as we were close
to our 3 hour limit.
• Drove to other end of town and watched the chainsaw carvers.
http://www.jarrettdahl.com. They set up shop in a parking lot in the summer. Amazing work. I went home with a little bear for my front porch.
• National Presidential Wax Museum -
http://www.presidentialwaxmuseum.com- I usually find wax museums quite creepy. But these are quite well done. Many of the presidents in famous scenes. This was my Dad's first restroom comedy routine - I guess the train ride & ice cream kicked something in. We were out in the large parking lot Mom & I were deciding if we wanted to do miniature golf. Well Dad bellows he don't care what we do he has to ***insert non church word***! Then marches to the museum to do so. There was some ladies doing a wine tasting in the gazebo in the parking lot and all heard it. Giggling abounded LOL.
• Mount Rushmore -
https://www.nps.gov/moru/index.htm- Very pretty and not too crowded. We took the quarter mile walk down to the base and around. All on decking or packed dirt. Going back up all the stairs was a little challenging
but manageable.
• Drive around Badlands checking out the views.
• Boondocks - which sadly is now closed. Fun little roadside spot for burgers and fries.
• Back to Cadillac Jacks for gambling fun and resting up from a busy day! They had entered us in their slot tourney so we gave it a try but didn't win!
