Charleston
People dressing up In a little place known as Charleston....
Live "Mam and Pa Ray", grandparents of Will and Adam, parents/step parents of Bill and Frances. The ride down from Charlotte was relatively short- 4 hours in an air conditioned car with sufficient ipod battery life didn't bother me in the slightest, plus windscreen in the Jeep was also replaced during our visit to Stacey and David's so the slightly unnerving idea of the windscreen falling in and smashing all over our faces was nicely put to rest.
Arriving at Bobbye and Ray's was a lovely surprise- cottage style home, big enough for us all to fit comfortably (each of us in our own paired off room) complete with a Mini Cooper (!!!!!!!!!!) in the garage. I have been drooling over it the whole time we've been here.
The first night of our stay, Maeghan and I experienced (for the first time) Mam's famous cooking: pork and vegetables done to perfection. Not to mention the pound cake for dessert which topped the whole meal off. Pretty much straight after the meal everyone was so tired from the long day, we all retreated to our rooms and got ready for a lovely
day at the market the next day.
Thursday met us with sunshine and 90 degree heat (thats about 30 degrees for all of you back at home =P) as we set off towards the market in the town of Charleston. Sure it was hot, but it was set up similar to the queen vic market but just LONG rather than wide, complete with fans in the ceiling and many people walking around taking a look at what there was to see. I bought some jewellery, and a cool wooden box that opens a special way from the puzzle stand, and a tin at the "candy store" that you can fill up with whatever/as much as you could fill it with.
After a few hours of looking around we had some lunch, looked around a little more, drove along the water side (while viewing the HUGE houses that are on the water's edge) and eventually made our way home- all quite exhausted and drenched in sweat- yes thats right, drenched.
After a few hours of milling around/chatting/trying to work out the puzzles that Will bought earlier (the little ones that Poppa loves, the ones that you can't stop obsessing
Charleston
Big houses on the battery. over until you figure it out) we decided it was time to head down to the pool and splash around. The water itself was as hot as shower, but still refreshing and fun to mess around in. We then came home and experienced yet again another one of Mam's PERFECT meals: Crab cakes, grits, buttered peas and mixed salad. Sososososososo good. It was then pretty clear that we were all exhausted, so it was off to bed ready for an earlish start so we could set off towards the
Middleton Plantation
.
Come Friday, it was off to the
Middleton Plantation
for an "exclusive" tour from our very own Mam (whom volunteers at this beautiful place a couple of times a month, being the history buff that she is) and despite the hot hot hot hot HOT weather.... add another HOT for emphasis.... it was lovely hearing about the Middleton family who lasted through 4 generations owning the land, through the civil war even.... and ended up creating a beautiful plantation with many historical plants and landmarks for the present day to see.
On the way home we stopped by a few HUGE HOUSES around the area that Mam and Pa Ray
live in, the difference in architecture between here and home is astronomical, these places are very much built to adapt to the climate and lets not forget the fact that the prices to build over here are significantly lower than australia.... yeah take that australia!
Although it was a wonderful experience... we did all sweat out about the equivalent to our body weight, so it was
crucial that we go to a fast food joint called "Five Guys" (again) and get our eat on by scoffing down some fake cheese and some AMAZING fries. AMAZING.
After being sufficiently satisfied, it was off to home to relax, splash about in the pool (for all of about 30 seconds as it started raining and thundering) and lying around waiting for dinner, thusly to this point where I am writing this blog. Will is sitting next to me right now NOMNOMNOMING a jawbreaker he bought at the market yesterday, and we are waiting for the baseball to start.
Tonight will be a restful sleep, as tomorrow is our last day down memory lane after a long week of driving, sweating, site seeing and eating. Thankyou to the Beck's for dragging me
along! =D
Love to home <3

Dear Rachel,Your mum sent me your face book details today, It certainly looks as if you are living the high life. We've not been as far south as Charleston, the furthest we have been is Williamsburg/Jamestown and that area.Usa is certainly very different but I love it. Bye Love Pat and Alan
