This cross country road trip is a 40th Wedding Anniversary celebration, so we would be remiss if we did not return to our honeymoon spot, Charleston SC. In 1978 it was August, so you can imagine the temperature outside, but we were young and high 90s-high humidity was fine. It was a little different on this trip...to say the least. The first couple days we were there the weather was cool, but sunny. Perfect weather for walking around and viewing the battery area historic homes, exactly as we remembered them. What wonderful memories! We had a great time, testing out some wonderful restaurants and seeing the old sites. In 1977, we couldn't afford fine dining (or any dining) that I can remember, I think we packed food in our cooler to eat in the hotel. On the first night of our honeymoon I popped open a bottle of fine Champaign. I'd never done that before and narrowly avoided the plastic cork as it rocketed into the ceiling to leave a permanent dent to mark our anniversary :-) Together we live and learn, I now know how not to open a Champaign bottle and understand fine Champaign does not come with a

plastic cork. On an Airman's salary of around $3000 a year, we had to make due with plastic corks and cooler food. They really were good times even when we were poor.

Then came the weather forecast, possible light freezing rain on the day before we were supposed to depart. It's OK I said, it'll melt by noon. Then another update, a little light freezing rain and some light snow. We considered leaving early, but still I said, "it'll melt OK". Then after it was too late to leave, they update the forecast to say up to 7 inches of snow and very cold temps. So much for leaving now, we were in for the duration. We stayed an extra day and left when the main roads were passable, though barely. Leave it to me to come during an historic snow and cold event.

It's the good and bad things that bring the lasting memories, and this one will last a while, like the first trip to Charleston has.

Hi Mihyon and Mike, How nice to start your trip in Charleston and I can't believe it snowed there! I hope the rest of your trip has a temperature above 50 degrees Fahrenheit! Can't wait to see more pictures, Love, Susan
