The Pains of War Alexandria Billington Psyc 150: Psychology of WWII, Paper #1 Pain is not merely the manifestation of some physical hurting from an injury, it comes in many different forms. It can be physical as well as mental. Pain is used as a warning sign to symbolize that something is wrong. Ever since birth, people are dependent on pain to recognize problems and to know when to take action about them. Without pain, there would be no sense of danger, it forces people and organisms to make the necessary changes for survival. The premise is the same with psychological pain, the pain experienced from social exclusion is so unpleasant that those who experience it will change in some way to avoid a recurrence (Williams & Zardo, 2001). People everywhere experience differing forms of pain ... read more

Why I am on this trip I decided to take this class for many reasons other than just wanting to go to Europe. I have learned about World War II ever since I was in middle school. Not being a real history buff, I wasn't too interested and never quite caught on. I understood the important aspects but not much else. I'm excited to learn about the war in a context I know I'm interested in, psychology. My bags are almost packed. I still have some laundry to do and a few things to find around the house and the mess I call a room. The hardest things to find are those that I have to find from all the stuff packed from school because that's everywhere, attic, garage, ... read more

Almost every day that I am volunteering will be structured the same except for my one day off a week....and I have some plans for those days! Every morning I'll wake up bright and early before the sun in order to walk the cubs, feed them, clean enclosures and do some raking. Then I get to eat breakfast followed by "project time"--bush walk, maintain enclosures, build toys, check for snares, road repairs, weeding etc, and then I get to eat lunch with all the other volunteers. Finally at 2 oclock we get quality time with the animals because the animals are hand reared and so they interact with humans everyday. I'm most excited about this part of the day and it'll probably be what gets me through project time. Seaview is known for its lions, siberian ... read more
