Lancaster Pennsylvania http://www.heygo.com Our surprise tour today with Aaron & Patrick took us to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Rich in heritage, history, and culture, In 1777, the city was briefly the capital of the American colonies and also served as Pennsylvania's capital from 1799 to 1812. John Wright, a prominent citizen, gave it the name “Lancaster” after Lancaster, England where he formerly lived. The city is known as the “Red Rose City” due to its link to Lancaster, England. We saw so many interesting buildings, one in particular Fulton Hall is named after Lancaster County's steam engine pioneer, Robert Fulton. The building was built on the foundation of Lancaster's pre-Revolutionary jail. In 1763, a vigilante gang known as the Paxton Boys massacred the Conestogo Indians being held there for their protection. The exterior wall of the jail co ... read more

" Stuff your eyes with wonder, live as if you'd drop dead in ten seconds. See the World. It's more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories." Ray Bradbury. According to the travel plans, next stop scheduled is Lancaster PA. A two block walk away from our NYC hotel was Penn Station where an Amtrak train was scheduled to leave station at 10h50 bound for Lancaster. For us South Africans from the quiet backwaters of the Eastern Cape, Penn station was a maelstrom of movement and semi chaos. People, trains, schedules and just a hint of panic as we anxiously studied the train departures and platforms. In the midst of all this we were requested to "evacuate" our seating area while the local feds searched a suspect looking bag. Also approached by a ... read more

"Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer" Destinations conjure up a myriad of fascinating thoughts. Enchanting, exciting and exhilarating places and countries. Mystery, and often the great unknown. But all destinations have one common denominator and that is one has to travel there by some mode. A few centuries ago the journey would have been undertaken by ship and on departure to wherever, it was a given that it would take “weeks” or possibly “months”. If you got to your destination you were generally a lucky sod in the knowledge that the ship hadn’t ended up on the bottom of some remote ocean. Today we are spoilt for choice and air travel puts us within reach of all corners of the globe in next to no time. It’s convenient, comfortable and supposedly ... read more

So bear with me if there are misspelled words and the grammar is incorrect. Thanks for reading. Also, I've changed the format for the most recent entries to be on top.Monday morning, we went to Shady Maple Smorgasbord just about 2 miles from Verna and Earl's house. We got there just after 7:30am. Perfect timing. The food was delicious. I had the strawberry French toast. As we were sitting there enjoying the food, I noticed a "boat load of Amish or Mennonite folks - like 60-80 people come marching in to the special banquet room. This Smorgasbord is the biggest in the country. Besides feeding tons ... read more

What a great and stress-free day! Lancaster is in the heart of Amish country, but they’re not the only folks that live ‘simply’ around here – you’ve got Mennonites and Brethren, too. So what was the first thing we did this morning? An Amish market! The market is called Root’s, and it’s pronounced a little differently than I would’ve thought. But it’s a happening place. It’s like a big farmer’s market and flea market all in one, and it meets basically every day. And it’s massive. So many people were selling things, and many more were wandering the aisles – both indoors and out – looking for just about anything you could want. Many of the vendors are Amish or Mennonites, typically with their distinctive clothing and hairstyles. And if you want something, you can probably ... read more

Had an easy drive up from Washington DC around 3 hours. Staying in Gap which is about 12 miles from Lancaster out in a small town in the countryside.. so pretty! Thought it would be nice to spend our last 3 days 2 nights in the countryside before heading back into NYC. We are staying in an Amish family's home in the township of Gap. Lovely young couple with two little kids 2 1/2 and 9 months... spick and span home with everything you need, they had gone away for the weekend so they rent out their home when they go away.. we have had some wonderful experiences with AirBNB and this is no different. They are not very strict, though no TV in house (which I guess is a good thing) as they seem to ... read more

we went to visit the amish people in Lancaster, PA. This was my favorite part of the whole trip because this was something new and the scenic beauty of country side was warm and pleasant. Also this type of farming was interesting to watch, because they were using mechanical tractors and animals instead of machine operated tractors. The farmers market had food cultivated by these farmers....which is in a way organic...so i tried the pumpkin pie and i liked it. But the amish community also don't like to be disturbed by visitors ...though we could observe their lifestyle only from a distance...it is surprising how they survive without technology. In my opinion native Americans are the true inhabitants and it is bad how the Quakers and Mennonites got treated by the new immigrants especially around new ... read more
