Several years ago a Houston doctor came to make a presentation to the Bellville Historical Society on “Medicine during the Civil War.” The official number of the men who died during that conflict is 620+ thousand, but the doctor figured the number was closer to 700,000 when the men who left the battlefield and headed home with injuries that resulted in septicemia and death were taken into account. No penicillin in those days of course. A person cannot possibly visit Gettysburg and not feel the history. In the three day battle here fifty-one thousand men were either killed, injured or were missing. The wounded and dying were crowded into nearly every building in Gettysburg and the dead lay in shallow inadequate graves; some had not been buried at all. Land was purchased for a proper burial ... read more

Once again your intrepid tourists were up bright and early to tackle the day. Craig snuck out quietly and considerately to take some sunrise shots of the falls, and almost immediately ruined his efforts by waking me up at 4.30 am with a text message announcing he was in Canada. Some hours later the rest of us woke up, Craig returned for breakfast, and we all set out with our newly knowledgable tour guide to experience the Canadian side of the falls. As we passed through Canadian customs and collected another stamp on our passports, I suddenly understood the need to announce to someone who might otherwise be asleep that I had just walked into another country. The view of Niagara Falls from Canada is simply breathtaking. Being there fairly early in the morning the place ... read more

Hi, We started our day by getting really neat pictures out of our 9th floor window. We checked out and went to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. We ate at the largest McDonalds we had ever seen in our lives, on one side it had four kitchens and on the other side of the room the same and a McDonald’s dessert station. We spent a couple of hours at the museum, had fun, took pictures and bought souvenirs. We then went to the Library of Congress and did a Geocache, so we could say we did one in Washington, D.C. We then headed to Gettysburg, we kept getting off the pike, but we never found a gas station. We did find a gate to the CIA, a gate to the Park Police headquarters, and ... read more

It's been a sobering day at Gettysburg. Unlike July 1863 it's been cool and rainy but somehow this weather fits the sense of the place well. As we drove up from Steve's parents outside Baltimore this morning, when we passed from Maryland to Pennsylvania we were met with a sign telling us we were crossing the Mason-Dixon line - our first reminder of the war that nearly brought our country to ruin. Driving along the country highway the 19th century houses crowd to the edge of the road and you can imagine what the dusty dirt road was like when the Union Army was hurrying along to Gettysburg - many of these home witnessed that very trek. Of course, we had to have the appropriate music for this start to our road trip and so the ... read more

Winter certainly snuck up on us! Officially I suppose it’s still autumn, but today was bleak and brisk and felt every bit like winter to me. Perhaps the cold breezes and gray clouds and the bundled coat to keep out the 40-degree chill were an appropriate setting for a viewing of a battlefield carrying the memory of so much death. I’m not trying to sound cynical, but I just don’t consider Gettysburg to be a very cheerful place. It’s an interesting place to visit and included a beautiful drive through part of the Pennsylvania countryside, so it made a great day-trip for us. Once we arrived, we started out with a free, 90-minute walking tour around the battlefield, guided by a friendly employee of the National Parks Service. I was freezing, and my hips didn’t appreciate ... read more

After leaving the D.C. area we went straight north to Gettysburg. This battlefield is always worth a visit for me and a guided tour by a ranger is worth a little extra money. Marilyn did it on horseback the first day and joined myself and John on the tour on the second day. What is it about women and horses? My mind is reeling with theories and I'm not sure I should talk about them here. There is a new visitors center too. This was a three day battle on July 1,2, and 3 of 1863. John, our tour guide was very good. As you can see, he is a little guy. I think Marilyn is a little taller and she is only 5'4". It was considered a Union victory but just barely since Lee's army ... read more

We left Charlottesville and headed north as we drive to Gettysburg. Mid morning we entered Shenandoah National Park and drove the beautiful Skyline Drive on a clear day in May . Traffic is sparse with no tourists so early in the season. Karen drove and I enjoyed the scenery, spotting a bear walking through the woods. Gettysburg National historic site is a memorable place. Over one hundred years later the impact of three days of deadly battle in a hot July and a two minute speech is difficult to describe. We spent all day visiting the museum, cyclorama center, and battlefields. This is certainly a place that should be on everyone's "Bucket List". ... read more

The drive from Lexington through eastern Kentucky, into West Virginia, the top (Panhandle) of Maryland and on to Gettysburg, PA is beautiful, especially in spring with redbuds in bloom on the hillsides and Bradford Pear, apple, and Japanese cherry trees in abundance. It's a little rugged in spots (some 6% grades); but nothing the Schooner and Wes couldn't handle. The black dots along a route on AAA maps indicate scenic byways and we were plenty dotted! We dry camped behind a Cracker Barrel in Cross Lanes, W. Virginia. This is a time when chain restaurants come in handy - there was a TGI Friday's almost adjacent to where we were parked. In Gettysburg we camped at Gettysburg Camp Ground on Fairfield Road. It's a nice park on the banks of the picturesque Marsh Creek. We visited ... read more

Paul, Jim and I drove to Gettysburg to see the new visitor center. It is much larger than the old one and covers US history from before the Civil War until the Civil Rights era. I hope you enjoy the photographs. We did not have time to tour the entire battlefield, so we concentrated on the High Water Mark and the Devil's Den. I am always amazed that Pickett's men actually reached the stone wall and a few crossed it. It is a mile from the High Water Mark to where the charge began. ... read more

Next morning we went to a pancake breakfast there at the camp and while the kids finished up and went to the park I tore the truck and trailer apart and cleaned it all up while looking for the kids.....found them where 3 of the kids had already "looked". we packed everything up and drove into Gettsyburg. We found the visitor center, a few battlefields and the Cemetery. Also the sight of the Gettysburg Address. We went to Cemetery Hill battlefield first then across the street to the Cemetery. It was really amazing to see so many old grave sites and some much of them unknown. There where people for all the big wars buried there. We hooked up to the part of a tour while there and got to hear about the site of the ... read more
