Who would have thought that Amish country would enable such immaturity spring to life so easily. It’s impossible to not think of sex when you see it on the map. But apart from taking the photo of the sign upon arrival and the word making you think about it. This place has not much to do with it at all. Pittsburgh is on the west of Pennsylvania and the long drive toward Philedelphia was broken up as we drove along the south of the state. Along the highway I noticed a sign saying Flight 93 memorial and it triggered my memory that the 4th plane of September 11 crashed in the open fields of this state. I turned off and told Robert Parish when he woke up that, “We have a detour.” Nothing much is to ... read more

We had our latest history lesson, touring through a Civil War museum in Harrisburg and touring through the “battlefields” of Gettysburg. It was a beautiful sunny day while we walked and cycled through the peaceful fields, trying to envision the horrors of battle, where more men died than in any other war fought in North America. The tour encompassed 24 miles, and had an abundance of memorials, statues, fencing, rock walls, and cannons. We even came across a General and Sargent, who were willing to let us pose with them and their rifle! Although not a war of our own country, with the upcoming Remembrance Day ceremonies on November 11, it made us reflect on the sacrifices of all those who serve their countries, in order to bring freedom and peace.... read more

When visiting Gettysburg, I recommend seeing the movie after an orientation tour. We saw the movie first but many places in the following diorama didn’t make much sense to us. 1st thing in the morning we went on a bus tour, we wanted the private car tour but those are not easy to find, 1st come/1st serve. The bus tour is fine for getting a feel of the area; the tour guides are volunteers and are good for some basic info. Our guide was eager to impart as much info as he could and did some by examples; how the regiments were lined up. But they cover the entire park in a loop so there is mostly general info. We then took a ranger led hike at 3:30 from the cemetery. The ranger led the hike ... read more

The National Park visitor centre at Gettysburg is simply amazing. It took us about 4 hours to take in the US Civil War museum, film and diorama portraying the Gettysburg battle. We spent another 2.5 hours touring the actual battlefields with Dennis, a guide who came with us in the car and gave us a personal commentary on the 3-day battle between the Unionist and the Confederate armies. There's about 1,400 different war memorials around the town. Separately, rangers routinely give free talks and tours on specific themes. We attended a 1-hour talk on 'The Civil War soldier', and Jackson volunteered to be dressed up in the uniform and 40 pounds of gear, as worn/carried by a regular soldier in 1863. Quite a sight, even without the mud, mould and lice! Although the historical experience was ... read more

June 18 Gettysburg Checked out of the Motel 6 in Hagerstown and headed North on 81 into Pennyslvania intending to cut across on Hwy 30 at Chambersburg to Gettysburg. When I got to Gettysburg it was bumper to bumper traffic across town to the Visitor Center on the other end of town. I see now I should have went across on I-70 to Frederick and then North on Hwy 15. Although a longer drive it takes you right in to the Visitor Center Entrance on the South end of town. I finally got to the visitor center but all they cared about was selling tickets to the various shows they had as well as food at their cafeteria and stuff at their gift shops. I did good to get a map out of them of the ... read more

There’s something called "the fog of war." When military experts or historians use the term, they’re referring to the uncertainty that descends over a battlefield once fighting begins. The strength of the enemy’s forces, their location, even the strength and location of your own forces, all such information becomes clouded with ambiguity while the battle rages on. I thought of this phrase last Friday as I stood in the center of the Cyclorama at Gettysburg. This panoramic painting, mounted on the curved walls of a cylindrical room, is designed to make viewers feel as if they are standing in the midst of the battle that took place here. It depicts the afternoon of July 3, 1863, when the Confederate Army made an all-out assault on the Union line along Cemetery Ridge, just outside the town of ... read more

Brain overload! That's how I feel after a day touring the Battlefields at Gettysburg. We got up early to take Karlie to daycare and then headed to the battlefields. They had a lot to offer in the way of tours and we chose to go on the bus tour of the battlefields and then take the shuttle over to President Eisenhower & Mamie's home afterward. The battlefield tour lasted 2 1/2 hours and the guide was a walking textbook. It was amazing to listen to him tell about the battles and points of interest. It was as if you were actually in battle. Now as most of you know I am not a history buff, but it is hard not to get wrapped up in all the history and emotion of what happened there. Needlesss to ... read more

Hi. This is Brandon. Whatever. Yesterday we went in a tower. We had to walk lots of steps. Then we got to see everything at the battlefield at Gettysburg. That's all I have. Hi. This is Ryan. Yesterday we went to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. We saw where the soldiers fought the Civil War. Then we did a tour of the battlefields and we saw Culp's Hill. We also saw the Peach Farm, the Wheat Field, Little Round Top and Big Round Top. We saw how to load guns and cannons. Then we left to the Migliazzo's house. When we got there Luke and Mark were screaming. Yesterday was very fun. What's up??? (Karyn) How are your normal lives going? Have you ever dragged yourself through piles and piles of history for hours on end? I did, yesterday. ... read more
