My plan that morning had been for everyone to get up and drive out to Bagby Hot Springs. Unfortunately, they were all out later than intended. Chris didn't get home until shortly after midnight which meant he had a headache at 5:30am. So we cancelled that plan because I didn't want Chris to get a migraine. We had far too much driving planned that day for that to happen. So, everyone went back to bed. We all met up in downtown Portland at the Saturday Market (it was Sunday). We glanced at the Voodoo donut line and decided hell no. Donuts are good but not THAT good. We have Psycho Donuts back in San Jose (they're just as good). We found coffee and then headed to our market. Anna really wanted to go and had heard ... read more

We flew in late on Friday night. Chris had to work all day (I had the day off) so Arya and I picked him up from work at 3:30pm. We got dinner on the way to the airport, flew through security and had a long wait in the terminal. I made a valiant effort to exhaust Arya by repeatedly running up and down the "travelator"- she gave up somewhere around the 15th trip. Our flight took off at 8:10pm and we arrived sometime around 9:30pm. Anna was already in Portland at our Airbnb house rental, and she was ready with eclipse themed wine and beer. God bless that girl. Arya had slept most of the flight, and I was very grateful I had packed the wearable baby carrier this trip. Otherwise I'm not sure how we ... read more

DUG BAR In 1963 I stumbled across a novel written by a fellow calling himself Will Henry. He named his story From Where The Sun Now Stands and it was about the Nez Perce War. During the month of August I read that whole story seven times. It was an enthralling account written from the perspective of a young Nez Perce in the Wallowa band named Heyets, who was about my age. I had just turned 15. It was the summer between my freshman and sophomore year when our family moved from Auburn, CA down to Santa Maria. I had not yet made new friends so I took up reading and found that I liked it. The Nez Perce War has been a favorite topic ever since. Of particular interest was a place called Dug Bar ... read more

August 2, 2017 Place: Portland, Weather: 77 and sunny Hours Driving: 4 hours States Drive Thru: Washington and Oregon Miles: 238 Restaurants: Subway Movies: Games: Books: Arf (Elizabeth), Dunkirk (Matt), El Elefante sin Memoria (Ben-for Spanish) Last night was our last night on the houseboat. We all slept very well on the boat. I'm a little surprised seeing that it wasn't the greatest mattress and Paul and I felt a little like our feet were higher than our heads just slightly. Yet, we boat slept well. Maybe it was the ever so gentle rocking. I mean gentle because any more than that might have had me at the Lake Union Courtyard. I woke up and brewed my coffee and went to the roof to watch the scullers (rowers) silently cutting through the water just as the ... read more

Restaurants: Slappy Cakes, Yami Sushi Movies: Games: Books: American Born Chinese (Ben), Gravity Falls journal (Matt), Dog On It (Biddy) Thump, thump, thump. Creak, creak, thump. Bang, bang, bang, 5:30 AM? WTF? What's the Flipside? Us on the other side of the noise. This went on all morning. I would have sworn they were doing construction above our heads. I was so mad. I got up and hammered on the wall. We all tried to sleep longer. Finally, I just got up to take a shower. Grrr. Once everyone was up, we headed out for breakfast to a place called Slappy Jacks as recommended by our friends ... read more

Mileage – 193.9 Total mileage for the trip - 4146 Today started out differently. We packed the rest of our bags with all that has to go back (except the few things we needed for today). After breakfast we got the rest of our stuff and headed to Parker. It was cloudy and cold. At least it wasn’t windy like last night. As we were driving down the road, it started to drizzle, but only drizzled for a few minutes. That was the longest rain we had on the entire trip. We drove along the Oregon coast – one of the 7 scenic wonders of Oregon. This is not North Carolina. You drive on the coast and all you see are trees and hills. I felt like we are driving in the NC Mountains. We tried ... read more

Mileage: 323.5 Got up early this morning and headed out to Smith Rock State Park. If you are a rock climber you know all about this park. One of its major attractions is Monkey Face. We got up early because we knew it was going to be a long day and we knew our activities were going to be in warm places, so we wanted to get to them as early as possible. Of course, we had to see Smith Rock Park, one of the 7 wonders of Oregon, since we were the Smith sisters. While we were there, we were able to get both the Smith Rock and the Three Sisters Mountains in one picture. Of course, we did a bit of hiking and rock climbing and got lots of pictures. We had to be ... read more

Mileage 280.7 Today was a first for us. On our two previous trips we never stayed at a hotel for 2 nights, but Bend was centrally located and it worked for us. It felt great to get up and not to have to pack up and take the suitcases with us. Last night’s hotel night was my Chase Marriott credit card free night and tonight’s is points. Yes, we like the free nights. We got up and ate breakfast then packed our day packs and hit the road early. We tried to stop at the lava cave on the way out but it wasn’t opened yet, so we headed on to Crater Lake. I was back seat so that I could finish up the pictures to the blog and get it posted. Then my job was ... read more

Mileage 247.8 The day started off with me stuck on stupid again. I couldn’t figure out how to turn off the water in the tub. But at least it wasn’t just me. Susan dropped her cutlery at breakfast and then ran the luggage cart into the wall. (oh yea, we stayed for a free night at Hilton Garden Inn and I scored 3 free breakfasts for us). Now at breakfast we had to tell Pam to get off her phone. After eating we did our usual pack up and start off. We headed to Salem to see the Capital building, and then headed towards Lebanon. There we found a covered bridge: The Hoffman Bridge over Crabtree Creek (who know Crabtree Creek went from Raleigh to Oregon.. ha.ha ) We got gas in Lebanon and remember in ... read more
