We saw a multitude of different sights as we worked our way up the Oregon Coast. We all know what a bountiful bonanza Oregon was for the Early Settlers. We saw grand evidence of that in one of the most picturesque mansions I have ever seen. Perched atop a scenic knoll in the middle of a coastal town was the former home of one of the first Timber Barons and it was really something to behold. Completely restored, it was as pristine as the day it was built. Another surprising thing to us was the prevalence of Tsunami Warning signs. We are constantly thinking about Hurricanes in the East, but this Tsunami thing is something new to us. One sign in the local storefront window said it all- in case of Tsunami, Run Like Hell. There ... read more

Well......we made it! Rolled in on a sunny day (unusual for here) and were greeted by our friends Bill & Bev Dunlap. They were gracious enough to put us up for a little a few weeks while we explored the area. Wow what a beautiful area. Rolling mountains that go right up to the sea!! As an added bonus the state of Oregon will let you drive a 4x4, atv, motorcycle on designated areas. We had lots of fun driving Stacy's truck on the beach!!! The Redwoods were way cool....you could probably build several houses out of one tree....not that I would ever cut one down!!!!... read more

Traveled from Florence to Coos Bay yesterday. The road was a bit more inland than from Newport to Florence...that one was "cliff side" most of the time and white-knuckle driving...much better a bit inland on the nerves!!! We parked at the Mill Casino parking lot (free) and took the car to go explore the area. We went out to the coast and listened to the sea lions (it was pretty foggy...you could just barely see them on the rocks off-shore). Tromped around the state park at the end of the road...definitely needed polarized sun glasses!!! When we came back through Charleston, the bridge was up, so we stopped for a cup of clam chowder and a beer. It was just a little "hole in the wall" place, but they had a fabulous chef and the chowder ... read more

Day 57 Here on the Oregon coast we have begun to appreciate days that are only overcast with intermittent sprinkles - these are terrific weather days for us as opposed to the usual heavy rain and even hail. On the first 'nice' day Ron flew his glider on the beach. In the picture notice how the mountain meets the ocean in the background. This was the beach at the Nehalem Bay State park. Our campsite was separated from the beach by an enormous sand dune. Three black tailed deer walked through our campsite one morning and there were sign of elk everywhere, but we never spotted one . We had hours and hours of sunshine on the 29th and took a look at Cape Arago which is near our newest campground at Coos Bay. There were ... read more

today i made my first state crossing!! i shaked my booty when i entered into oregon and took some cheesy pictures. i drove along the 101 from orick, ca to coos bay, or, and camped at sunset bay state park tonight. i stopped in the town of bandon to get some food and got pulled over, i guess they dont drive that fast 'round here. i smiled and declared i wasnt from these parts, in san diego i ride my bike faster then there speed limit. he checked out my license and sent me on my way since i wasnt a felon. the weather was beautiful until about 6 then it started to get a little cloudy and rainy looking, so i decided to stay in a yurt instead of a tent. i checked in to ... read more

Not long after the jet lag wore off returning from our hiatus in Asia (more about that later...how I am by trying to publish my debaucherious tails that I've dubbed 'Into the Orient, I Did Not Do Any Illegal Drugs in Asia', book...with full color pictures and zero spell check to-date) I myself was off...down the Oregon Coast for a bit of "work" for the week. You know for that 'jobby thingy' that keeps the Organic veggies in stock and the fresh potable water leaking from the kitchen faucet? I will say, that for the better part of what other people would call their 'young adulthood', I swear I'm still an 'immature homeless kid', I have been fortunate enough to be on the road, travelling for my dinero for several years now. Fueled by an adolescents ... read more

Tom: Just a quickie here as we're currently motel'ing it down the west coast. All is good apart from the distinct lack of sunshine, hopefully the sun will be less shy as we travel south as we have a few sunbathe-ing days planned for San Fran. The views are awesome Mount Saint Helens was simply breathtaking and the roads are smooth and navigating is about as easy as it can be, apart from the centre of Portland which was just one massive Interstate merry-go-round. It looks like we've allocated too many days for this leg of the journey so we may go and do the touristy thing down in LA. ... read more

This entry covers our trip from Fort Bidwell, CA to Valley of the Rogue, OR, where we spent three days, and the five days we stayed in Coos Bay, on the south Oregon coast. Our last night in Fort Bidwell saw snow and wind. We had planned to take a shortcut over Fandango Pass, but decided given the snow, that we had better take a longer, but less elevated route to our next stop at Valley of the Rogue (named for the wild and scenic Rogue River), in southwest Oregon. Although it snowed on the higher passes, the road remained dry and safe and we arrived mid-afternoon at the Valley of the Rogue State Park and settled in for a three day stay. On 9 April, we left Valley of the Rogue and traveled north on ... read more

BELOW THE FALLS - SHANE'S CREATION 2 people. 2, two-storey timber-frame homes. 2 years. Amazing..... A Herculean feat by anyone's standards. Located on a stretch of Glenn Creek where wild salmon and steelhead return each year to spawn, and just below the natural beauty of Golden and Silver Falls, are two, lodge-style, timber-frame homes that were artfully designed and constructed by Erin's older brother, Shane Daugherty. The homes have been constructed in such a way that they conjure up times past, when simple, yet highly skilled craftsmen used the art of mother nature herself for their inspiration. The homes use myrtlewood, maple, fir, redwood, blue pine, and other woods in their construction. And the way that Shane has used each of these woods, either alone or in varying combinations, is an amazing art in itself - ... read more

We headed for Coos Bay today and a campground nearby to the Honda dealer we found that will service the van. We drove out about 13 miles to Cape Arago, a nice stretch of beach with some smaller rocks in the ocean. We came to a look out with quite a few people and a terrible racket coming from the rocks below. We looked out and saw a colony of sea lions - hundreds of them basking on the rocky ledges. There were three types - elephant head, California and Golden Sea Lions. We saw new baby ones lying on the rocks also. What a nice surprise for us. We saw a picturesque lighthouse along the beach also. WE came back into town and found the dealer and then we found an electronic repair placed that ... read more
