Oregon 2018. McKenzie Bridge. The Middle Fork Ranger Station confirmed that the road we were to use was closed since the fire was still active. It was due to rain for most of the day so the decision was taken to use the regular roads to head towards Eugene, through Jasper and then join the Highway 126 at Springfield to head west to Harbicks Country Inn by the McKenzie river. A total of 76 miles and only 420 metres of ascent. It started to rain lightly as we set off at 8.30 and so the roads were wet and the traffic was heavy with all sorts of vehicle, rdpecylogging and other trucks. The side margin was narrow in places and they drove a bit too close for comfort at times making the first half hour a ... read more

Hard to believe we've been gone ten days. After an overnight in Mammoth, we stopped in Tahoe and are now in Bend. Crown Villa RV park is a step up from our usual parks (see the pictures). Along the way we've hiked to an alpine meadow, followed the river in Bend. Today's adventure - we washed clothes. Cool laundry - takes credit card and will notify you by text when wash/dry is done.... read more

blog 09-27-17 Chehalas, WA to Bend, OR We have long since learned not to believe the google maps about how long it takes to get to a destination. Granted, we go slower then 70 on the interstates but 2 hrs longer on a 4 hr trip, come on! We left the campground by 10 and were on the I-5 15 min later with very little traffic. It was a little hilly, but not bad and we were around Portland and on Rt 26 heading east and south within 1 1/2 hrs. They didn't warn us that we would be viewing Mt Hood around every bend and each viewing was better than the last. There is snow on the mountain and it is a perfect cone so it just sticks up everywhere, and being 11,250 ft there ... read more

Mileage 247.8 The day started off with me stuck on stupid again. I couldn’t figure out how to turn off the water in the tub. But at least it wasn’t just me. Susan dropped her cutlery at breakfast and then ran the luggage cart into the wall. (oh yea, we stayed for a free night at Hilton Garden Inn and I scored 3 free breakfasts for us). Now at breakfast we had to tell Pam to get off her phone. After eating we did our usual pack up and start off. We headed to Salem to see the Capital building, and then headed towards Lebanon. There we found a covered bridge: The Hoffman Bridge over Crabtree Creek (who know Crabtree Creek went from Raleigh to Oregon.. ha.ha ) We got gas in Lebanon and remember in ... read more

Mon: A long day in breathtaking landscape First thing first, coffee! We reached Thump in downtown at 6:45 am. Downtown Bend was absolutely dead. No car, not a person around. Just a lonely coffee shop with a dim light. Where we come from, coffee shop of this caliber would have a line out the door at this hour. Still, one guy beat us with his laptop. Smith Rock was 30min from there. It was so empty that we were disoriented. We got on Misery Ridge trail by 8 am and were immediately rewarded with the endless postcard view of the cliff and river running at its foot. Misery Ridge trail went straight up on the short switchbacks. There were a few groups of climbers hiking steady and fast with loads of gear. The trail drops down ... read more

Amy: We are officially in Oregon. However, dad says that we won’t stop until we get to Oregon City, which is still a couple days away. In the meantime me and my siblings are making plans for when we get to Oregon City. Throughout the trip I’ve had time to talk to them, really talk to them. Most of the time I’m in my room or with some friends because I used to hate hanging out with my own family. I always felt that Jennifer and Jason sort of separated themselves from me, and I always felt that mom only wanted to argue with me. I realize now that I was wrong, I was the one separating myself from them, I was the one that was looking for an argument. I like the way this trip worked ... read more

The drive from Shady Firs RV Park in Randle WA to Sisters Creekside Campground in Sisters OR would be just under 300 miles and about 5 hours per MapQuest. There is a shorter route that takes two-lane roads the entire distance. Were I not pulling the Pilgrim, I would have taken that route, but I now opt for the easier Interstate highways when pulling the trailer particularly when it’s raining and the roads are wet, just as I found them on October 15, 2014. The first and last portions of the drive (about 150 miles total) would be on two-lane roads anyway. U.S. 12, which is the location of Shady Firs RV Park, took me from Randle to I-5, and OR 22 and U.S. 20 took me from Salem OR to Sisters where I completed the ... read more

We say goodbye to cool Portland and head roughly south east into central Oregon towards Bend. Miles of highway through endless forest over undulating terrain. We pass by Mount Hood, another active/inactive volcano looming large to the north of us. We take a comfort stop at what purports to be a ski station with a few sad two person chairs hanging inert in the now chilly air, and seemingly half of Mexico on a road trip also taking their comfort break here. Unlike us, they have broken open the jumbo size cooler boxes and appear to be starting a party. The endless forest gives way to high plains, low scrub and endless horizons, the Cascades away to the east in the haze. We look in vain for cowboys, but none are to be found as there ... read more
