Elan dropped us off at 11:45pm to the airport and even though I thought there was no more TSA precheck possibilities upon checking in, both Mark amd I got it! We left a couple of hours later, slept very little on the plane to Seattle and finally arrived bleary eyed in Portland.
After picking up our suitcase, had to check it because we must be prepared with knife and Swiss tool! And bedding for the RV plus a small pan set and camping plate set... Mark thinks I can make a gourmet meal now! Oh! And a lightweight down blanket... We head out in the 98*F weather on to public transportation to pick up our RV.
Ever stand at a bus stop, not knowing quite where you are and seeing the bus you want to catch on the ohter side of the street? Oh well, the next bus worked just as well. Very friendly people on the bus! I chatted to a woman who was from Maine! Then lived in Lowell, MA before coming to Portland, OR to be closer to her two boys who were being raised by her Father. He moved to Homer, Alaska for fishing, not
Bird watching
From the deck at Salty's sure anout the boys. Her seat partner had lived on Adak wih her boyfriend as part of a band for awhile. Down on their luck, they are both trying to make lives for themselves in Portland. The woman's final words to me were that her Father had finally turned himself into the police, not a violent crime but something to do with marijuana.
We luckily were paying attention and before we went too far past the Cruise America place, we signaled and hopped off the bus. the lady said that our RV was just behind the biger one in the parking lot and we could go put our stuff in it. Then she went to go get it...we waited in the office. Last fall we rented a 25'RV when we went to the Ren Faire in MN and to visit Mark's Mom in Central WI. It was spacious and new. They did not have any 19' ones to rent so this time we decided to get the smaller one. Easier to maneuver on the smaller coastal roads and through the woodlands and forests we plan on visiting on our way down to Trinidad and McKinleyville, CA.
The lady
pulled up a 25' RV! We said, no, we had requested a 19'... After a little discussion, we found out that they 19' RVs had either broken down or were rented out. We made our reservation in January! Someone in the upper management had switched our reservation to a 25' and not onky did not tell us, did not tell the lady either. No chice left but to take the 25'. This one was still spacious but definitely older and more worn than the one in MN. We only would be charged the cost of the smaller one amd she threw in kitchen box for free!
Time to head out on the road but we decided to go to Salty's for brunch and bottomless mimosas first. Sitting out on the deck and relaxingly eating and planning out our trip was definitely a good idea.
Susan said the IKEA store was good so we went there to walk a bit before heading south. I have only been in IKEA a few times and am constantly amazed with the cheap, cheap prices. We picked up a small 2 cup French Press for coffee and a couple of $3.49 pillows, that
are very good!
On the road south and by this time it is close to 5pm... We had planned on going to some hot springs and were looking for a campground, preferably a beautiful one in the woods...Emerald Valley RV Park sign, checked it out and stayed. Not quite what we had planned but we were a little fried and tired. Oh and the 98*F heat was wearing on Mark! Hooking up to the electricity we turned on the AC. Can't hear much while it is running but eventually it cooled off. White noise, emphasis on noise.
We also decided to change our plans and head straight to McKinleyville, CA to spend time with our friends, then do our hot springs and redwoods and pay our respects to Mark's brother's grave in Trinidad on the way back up.
