Sallisaw KOA, Sallisaw, Oklahoma We took yesterday off, mostly because we were tired and had some doubts about continuing long drives when we are tired. But there was also the minor little problem that I had run out of clean underwear. So we camped in, did laundry, went to Walmart for a few supplies, and took a nap. (No, I don't like to shop at Walmart. But it was close and besides, if we are staying at a KOA, we can shop at Walmart!). Humidity was pretty intense and with 90 degree temperatures, it was a bit challenging for us New Mexicans. With all that energy being built up, it wasn't surprising that our phones started broadcasting severe weather alerts. Around 11:00 pm a major thunderstorm rolled through. I guess there were tornado possibilities, but none ... read more

Sallisaw KOA, Sallisaw, Oklahoma Yep, we are at another KOA. And yes, I said earlier we don't like KOA's. But this is Memorial Day Weekend and the state parks are all chock full. Joan tried for an hour yesterday to find us a spot somewhere in this part of the world and she ended up frustrated and disappointed to have to pick the KOA. According to them, we got the last spot for tonight. There are a few spots open this morning, but they may fill in as the day progresses. But the weather forecast is not good, so there may be some cancellations. It was at least 150% humidity yesterday evening when we arrived and it isn't much better this morning. Skies are heavily overcast and our weather apps said we should expect rain any ... read more

Thursday, 12 June, 2014 We are back on the road again, this time with our grandson, Sean, who is 10 years old. His mother brought him over early this morning and we managed to get out a little after 8, early for us. I think Sean was asleep by the time we got to I-40, but we woke him up to see the Mississippi River at Memphis. As always, the roads between Memphis and Little Rock were awful, full of potholes and lousy patch jobs. We were in stop and stop traffic around Forrest City due to road construction, it took us half an hour to go 8 miles. Past Little Rock, however, the road was quite nice and the traffic not so heavy. The weather experts had us dreading thunder storms and maybe hail by ... read more

Monday, May 24th and Tuesday, May 25th. After we break camp, we take the scenic byway through the heart of the Flint Hills area of Kansas. We stop at the Tall Grass Prairie Preserve, a National Park site that is restoring the native grasslands which covered much of the Midwest before the area was settled by farmers. This area is relatively untouched because of the thick layer of flint lying just below the surface of the grass, making the ground impractical for plowing. We take a ride far out in the prairie, where no human habitation can be seen. A small herd of buffalo, recently established as part of the natural ecosystem, graze near the road, indifferent to our passing bus. We enjoy seeing the vistas and the wide variety of grasses, birds and wildflowers. On the ... read more

Hello from Sallisaw, OK. Another uneventful but long driving day (455 miles). When I was doing my flight planning last night I realized there was another convenient campground about 30 miles past Fort Smith, AR. Knowing there could be severe weather in Arkansas today and Saturday I decided to shoot for the extra mileage. I got an early start - after spending a few minutes talking with the Allegro RED folks parked next to me - and made it to my destination by 5 pm Tulsa time (ok I know I’m south of Tulsa but I AM in Oklahoma and Don Williams did a great song about living on Tulsa time!) I managed to miss any severe weather. Just northwest of Little Rock the sky was getting very dark. A quick check of my weather radio ... read more
