We packed up, cleaned up, and sat and drank coffee for as much time as we could with Erin before hitting the road. Erin is a smart, capable, confident, awake soul who is definitely “up to something” and we were glad to have as much time with her as we did. This was the first time we’d spent more than a day in one spot since leaving home. It felt like a real rest. By 11:30 or so on Sunday we were on the road. It was a good day to drive. The sky was socked in with clouds, the roads were clear and smooth, and there wasn’t a single traffic slowdown, save for one short spot where an accident had occurred. We talked and laughed and Sally worked online a bit and found us a ... read more

Our dear friends, Tim and Rebecca Shivers, allowed us to moochdock in their driveway for several weeks while we visited family back in Ohio. During our stay, Mike installed an electrical transfer switch to allow their home appliances and lights to run during power outages by switching over to a gasoline powered generator. We also spent a weekend down in Charleston, SC with them, in a beautiful Airbnb house located on a lake. Mike's nephew, Harrison Carter, was stationed there and paid us a visit. We enjoyed the Mummenschanz performance at the Gaillard Center and enjoyed a few hands of Canasta during the weekend.... read more

The Fayetteville RV Resort and Cottages was a well-kept campground where we enjoyed playing putt-putt near midnight. After a workout at Planet Fitness, we toured the US Army Airborne and Special Operations Museum located next to the Veterans Park. The AASOM offered a chronological tour of exhibits highlighting military operations over the decades from WWII to Afghanistan. The next day we visited the Averasboro Battlefield Museum and Chicora. Again, the south still views the civil war a little different than the north. Back in Fayettville, we rode the Cape Fear River Bike Trail along rolling hills and a river crossing.... read more

The Cashie (pronounced ca-shy-a) River Treehouses and Campground was a spartan but interesting site. A boardwalk along the river provided access to several cabins on stilts with trees growing through the cabins. We made a road trip from here to the Outer Banks. Nags Head was a colorful tourist trap. We parked the Jeep and walked a short distance to the ocean. The Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kill Devils Hill was a highlight of our southern journey. Standing right where powered flight was launched makes the hairs on your arms stand up. Truly inspirational! The members of Cashie Baptist Church (est. 1770) warmly welcomed us Sunday morning. The next day we visited the Hope Plantation and got a private tour by Sam. On the way back we had to stop at Bertie County Peanuts where ... read more

The drive from Lynchburg to Falls Lake State Recreation Area, Holly Point Campground, provided beautiful fall foliage. We dialed it back and rested for a couple days, shopped and did laundry. The State Farmer’s Market provided some tasty vegetables and apples. We did a car tour of Duke University and rode the rigorous golf course bike trail and some of the meandering American Tobacco bike trail. In a visit to Wake Forest, we toured the city Historical Museum, drove by the original Duke University campus (now a Baptist seminary) and visited Brad, Andrea and their kids.... read more

Friday 16th Out of our digs in Moorefield we headed North on Route 3 of the MABDR. 53 miles on winding roads through the forest. We riding for quite a while beside a stream in the forest and occasionally out into a cleared area with farms. We alternated between seal and gravel although the was doing its best to transform itself into gravel. It had usually only reached the pothole stage. We are getting close to Amish country and saw few signs warning of horse draw traffic. We saw no Amish farms or people. All the farms we saw had tractors, harvesters & pick-ups in their drives. Sometime during the day we crossed onto route 4. We passed a Mennanite church. Mennonites are members of certain Christian groups belonging to the church communities of Anabaptist denominations ... read more

Saturday 10th It was raining from the start of the ride today, so it was wet gear from the get-go. Some heavy rain & occasionally some less heavy. 20 miles on seal and then into the forest as usual. We climbed & climbed & then climbed a bit more, reaching around 3500 feet. On this road we met and spoke to a hunter in a 4wd. He said he was hunting hogs & bars (bears). He was following his dog by satellite tracker and he thought it was onto something in the bush, probably a "hog" We did 2 stream crossings early in the day without incident. Ian has just pointed out that we have just clicked over 4000kms on this trip so far. We are now into the Great Smokey Mountains – so looking for ... read more

A hike to the Oak Island Pier. Spent some time out on the fisherman's pier. Watched the people trying to catch the fish and heard the story of a shark sighting from one of the fishermen. Did some shopping in town and then back to the house for a relaxing afternoon. Later in the day we had a day at the beach. Our rental house is fully equipped. Beach chairs. Boogie boards. Umbrellas. Spent the afternoon enjoying our time...until Lori saw the shark. No one else believed it, so the rest stayed in the ocean. Lori sat in the beach chair sipping a beverage and watching for another shark.... read more
