With apologies to Bob Dylan… On Monday, we were hopeful Reading and sleeping in our room Then we looked at the storm a-comin’ And wondered how and when we’d get home There was no call from the car guys So we ordered Smashburgers online The delivery got all messed up And the food itself was not very fine Oh, mama, could this really be the end To be stuck inside of Durham with those Whitehall blues again? Then on Tuesday we found good coffee And extended our stay another night I was cold, I’d given up my winter coat When I thought that we would take a flight We were watching the storm very closely The mechanic called he didn’t know what’s wrong He’d keep working on the problem And I began to work on this ... read more

We’re in a hotel room in Durham, NC, an old conference center with few guests right now. The night receptionist, Monica, was sweet and warm and welcoming and inquisitive about who we are and what we were up to, The Best Christmas Receptionist Ever! The room is clean and the two queen beds are not too soft. There’s plenty of really hot water. It’s very quiet. It’s The Best Christmas Hotel Room Ever!, or close enough for government work. The one minus we’ve encountered here is the coffee. Years ago we realized that calling hotel coffee “coffee” was an insult to actual coffee, and so have since called it Hot Brown Liquid, or HBL for short. The coffee here is, without question, The Worst Christmas HBL Ever! But otherwise, this is a good place to hang ... read more

Today I was excited to ride bc the Ellies and I had decided yesterday that today we would ride together as a chore group! However, before riding bikes could happen, we were in charge of cooler duty once again and oh man what a feat that was! Raleigh was incredibly kind to us between the food donations from the church, alum, & Noah’s parents so we had to dig out the extra cooler from the trailer (shout out to NJ!) and labeled everything. The additional cooler had some serious black mold so we washed & bleached it as best as we could, added a plastic bag liner, and filled it with the remaining food. Needless to say, Carly was bonking by route meeting—it was hilarious! This is going to be a good day...! After Ryan gave ... read more

And that's it, folks. Back again in Durham, putting my life back together after an amazing dream. I slept terribly on the flights back -- maybe 5 hours on the 8-hour flight, and almost not at all on the last 4-hour redeye from LAX. I got into RDU at 5:30am, had a bit of a shuttle snafu but was still home by 6:15 or so. I know that you're supposed to stay awake for the day to get used to the time change, but it was physically impossible for me, especially since it was still dark. So, I crashed, hoping to wake up by 10 or so. But I was so freaking wiped, whenever I woke up I felt terrible and my shoulder tendons were shaking. It's kind of a weird feeling to describe, but there ... read more

DAY 25: MAY 16, 2013 I enjoyed a good night’s sleep on a comfy mattress and then had a leisurely breakfast of scrambled eggs, toast, sliced oranges, and salad with Jim and Barbara Maysilles on their back porch. There was some pomegranate jelly for the toast and some cranberry balsamic dressing for the salad. I never had salad for breakfast before. I ended up having salad for lunch and then more salad with supper. This is probably my first three salad day ever. After breakfast Jim and I drove out to Bennett’s Place and then met Barbara for lunch at a Jap place in Bright Leaf Square in downtown Durham. Thankfully the Jap place had some Thai food on the menu as well so I didn’t have to eat any fish bait. The salad ... read more

Today, I am in Durham, North Carolina. Most people know Durham as the home of Duke, one half of the most contested rivalry in US sports (Red Sox vs Yankees has the same level of heat, but historically has been more one sided). I came here for another reason, to explore the legacy of North Carolina’s slave communities. The place to do this is Historic Stagville. There are many old plantations in North Carolina that are now historic sites. Historic Stagville is one of the few that have their slave quarters intact. Historic Stagville The plantation site now looks very different that it did before the Civil War. Back then it was all open fields. Now it is covered with trees. The trees are certainly beautiful to look at, but they give a very ... read more

I have never been much of a writer. By that I mean that I don't have the required attention span for it. I don't think that my writing is all that bad but, a few mintues into writing anything, my mind begins to wander. Which makes it difficult to record my thoughts. That's what I wanted to do when I started this travel blog a few years ago. Record what I am thinking and feeling, right when I am thinking and feeling it. Especially since traveling has always been very thought provoking for me. It always seems to give me a fresh perspective on my life and my goals. And I always arrive home feeling inspired. This blog first began when I was headed off on my first trip to Europe, and a freind suggested that ... read more

My father makes me laugh so much.......Apparently my father is having some hearing issues (but he is in denial)...so it was always so funny to laugh about what he thought we were saying!!!!! haha I am still laughing about him thinking someone was "helping the dolphins", or that I wanted to buy a "hiking shirt".... it was just such a treat when he would repeat what he thought we said... hahaha This last week I had the chance to visit a few of the Carolina Beaches with my parents and sister Brittany Noel!!!! Obviously....sun, sand, surf.... always a good time... these are some of my observations.... MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina, was beautiful!!!….. and by far the MOST crowded beach on the Carolina Coast! Extremely built up, sky rises everywhere… trying to be a “mini Vegas”……lots ... read more

Durham to deliver the jeep James and Barbs' GPS directions took us straight to the address in sleepy Durham, with the university its only real focal point. We briefly stopped at the train station to check departures to local airport to pick up hire car (if we could get a stupid internet connection, everywhere seems to have WiFi but no computers, grr!). The earliest train left at 7.15pm that evening (airport only 12 miles away, not ideal!) Arriving at address to drop off jeep all we could really hope for is the owner of the jeep to be hospitable and kind enough to let us use their internet and possibly take us to the airport. Instead we were met by David, who instead of inviting us in for a drink after our long journey said "right, ... read more
