We went to see the broadway production of the Lion King last night at the Minskoff theatre in Times Square. Getting there was rather an ordeal as the rain had increased to a steady downpour and it was still very cold. We went into times square via the subway which didn't take very long but once there we were assaulted with a barrage of people all moving en masse with heads down and umbrellas up. We were hoping to have dinner somewhere near the theatre but the only decent place near it was so crowded that there were no seats left. Much to our disdain we were reduced to eating at McDonalds as it was the only place we could get to within a reasonable distance without getting completely soaked. The chicken burgers were actually pretty good and better quality than the muck you get at McDonalds in Perth.
We got to the theatre with wet legs but fairly dry otherwise. As you can imagine, no-one was really dressed up and jeans and overcoats were the fashion of the night.
The Minskoff is one of the best theatres on Broadway and our seats in the second row of the upper balcony were superb. Could have done with a little more heat as the aircon was quite cold and blowing on us with our damp legs but at least the seats were comfortable.
The show itself was fantastic with beautiful music and dancing and colourful and elaborate costumes. The stage was incredible and had steam venting out of it and giant sets popping up out of the middle of it. The giraffe costumes were huge and the scene with the wildebeasts stampeding was cleverly done and started up the back with video and then progressed to larger and larger costumed actors.
We came out after the show to more pouring rain but managed to hop into a taxi after just walking up the road a bit. Even with hundreds of people all coming out of shows at once it was easy to hail a cab. As a matter of fact one stopped before we even had to hail it.
It was a tiring night but well worth the effort.
