Engagements usually have a truly romantic story behind them but mine begins about 1 week before christmas, a move to the other side of the world and a closed airport. Last destination was Papua New Guinea but before that we had planned to spend a few days in NY, then spend christmas with Jons family in Canada and then go to PNG. So the plans changed when Heathrow Airport closed down due to snow. We were sitting in the boarding area and about to board when the flight was cancelled. We wasted no time and got our baggage and a cab and headed straight to Jons cousins house to re-book but the bad news was that we could not fly till chrissy day. Making the best of a bad situation we headed to Cambridge and stayed with Jon's Aunt and Uncle being very spoilt and eating like kings. Jon seemed very upset about the entire situation and I thought he was sad about not being with his family at christmas in Canada but little did I know he had planned a proposal in New York.
Christmas Eve was lovely in Cambridge but the next morning we were up and out the
door at 9 am to be dropped off at Heathrow and wait for our flight in the afternoon. So christmas day was spent in the airport eating whatever food was available. We finally made it to NY at 8pm (or 1am London time). I was stuffed and we were staying in a hotel at the airport because we had an early flight to Toronto the next day. I was ready for bed but Jon kept insisting we head out for a few hours to time square. I did not take much convincing but in the taxi I was almost falling asleep and wondering if I had made the right decision. Time square was unbelievably packed! It was cold and for christmas day.... there were soooooooo many people. We walked around to radio city and I was getting Jon to take pics of me near all the christmas decorations. Then out of nowhere Jon says 'I have something to ask you?' He got down on one knee and said 'will you marry me?' OMG! I was soooooo shocked. My first thought was... here?.... right here?...... this is an unusual spot ha ha ha ah and I just kept asking him 'are
you serious?, are you serious?' lol poor guy that wasn't what he wanted to hear and he finally said 'will you just answer the question!' and somewhere there I said YES! I tell you I have never been so surprised in my life, I didn't expect it and would never have believed my eyes except for the ring he presented and then got extra bonus points for saying it was a fake until I picked the one I wanted lol. With all that drama he looked at me and said c'mon, lets find a taxi... it's freezing. so 10 minutes later we were in a cab and on our way back to the hotel. Now it's times like this when there is no way that a girl can sleep and I was up till 3am skyping as many people as I could.
The next morning we were up and on a flight to Toronto , then a Robert Q bus to Windsor (Yuk). It was great to finally be in his family home with such special news. We had a great 3 weeks in Canada. Jon was able to catch up with friends and I met the remainder of his
family. Wedding plans began to be discussed and we did lots of shopping. His parents organised special celebrations for us and Jon and I took 3 days for ourselves and he took me to see Niagra Falls. It was beyond freezing but we had a great room with a jacuzzi overlooking the falls and ordered room service. It was a great way to celebrate a year of sooooo many great things. We also went across to Detroit and watched an American football game that was lots of fun too. I really love all the bad food you can purchase.
As Canada came to an end our visas for entry into PNG had still not come through and before we knew it we were booked on flights to Sydney where we were told to stay until approval was given. So next stop was Sydney and my mum was sooooooo excited. It was nice to see friends and family unexpectantly. 2 weeks later approval was given and we were in PNG beginning our new life. BOY was it a whirl wind trip. Jon later told me about the proposal he had planned and it did sound all rather romantic but the
more I think about it the more I realise our proposal came with the typical Rachelle dramas that occur on every adventure I embark on and therefore, it was just as it should have been.... perfect in every way! xxxxxxxxx This ones for you my love.
