We arrived in Manhattan at 3 pm. During the fifteen minutes that we were parked out in front of our hotel while we were checking in, we received two parking tickets…one for $115 and one for $90. New York City doesn’t waste any time. It’s really a busy city. Our hotel had a nice view of the Empire State building. We took the obligatory trip to Times square at about 2 AM and walked the streets of the city until 6 AM when we finally made it back to the hotel.... read more

Crossing over the Hudson via Brooklyn Bridge to Heather’s place in Brooklyn, I looked out from our subway car window over our shoulders and saw the illuminated Manhattan skylines behind us. Ah, we are in New York City again. Beau and I landed in Lombardia this evening from a rough plane ride and we managed to figure out how to ride the subway to Brooklyn, where we will be staying for the next few days. The NYC subway is a very extensive system, with $21 for a five-day pass. This should be an exciting adventure in the Big Apple, as always. We started our journey after spending a night in Brooklyn from the notorious Harlem, north of the Central Park, through the lush forest of Manhattan. It’s hard to believe that we survived walking in chaotic ... read more

Another thing I figure I oughtta do before leaving this world is to spend new years eve in Times Square New York City. So after having gone to foreign countries 2 years in a row, I figure its time to get to know America a bit too. So, Big Apple here we come! What I remembered most about New York City is the fact that they actually have places to eat open later than 9pm! Boy thats a nice change from the Bay Area I tell ya. We could actually go back to our place at any hour during the night, and still buy some meatballs and sandwiches from the deli/grocery store around the corner. Very nice! ... read more

With a new job and life in London secured it meant that the means were at last there to seriously think about a big trip, and also a friend with enough money and commitment to join me was a help. In January 1990 I wrote in my diary that my big ambition for the year was to 'go to America'. Didn't do it in 1990, in fact didn't leave Scotland but at least over 13 years later I got to achieve an old ambition. To keep costs down we flew in a budget way so it was Air India return on a 747. Shuttle from JFK to our hotel the Arlington on 25 Street West just round the corner from iconic Flatiron building. Went straight out that night despite being shattered and were soon atop the ... read more

A few weeks ago, my co-worker, Van, approached me with an idea to go on a cross country road trip to New York City and Washington DC. She had to drive back to her hometown of New Orleans and decided to make an entire road trip out of it. She offered to pay for the rental car and gas. All she needed was somebody to help drive with her. Of course I jumped at the idea of going on a cross country trip. We set off just after 10pm after I drove to Sherman Oaks to meet her at her apartment. Our plan was to just drive straight to New York City while switching off driving duties every few hours. Van took the first shift so we packed all of our things into our little rental ... read more

Bright lights, big city. New York City is it. As long as you don't drag your feet behind and go with the flow, you'll be fine. Regardless of your opinion about big cities, Manhattan will take your breath away. It's very much like on TV. Yellow cabs, huge department stores, poor people, rich people. Of course there is more to it than that. But why seek the sidestreets when Broadway is right there...? Madison Square Garden wasn't destroyed by Godzilla, and it wasn't destroyed by terrorists. Game on. Rockefeller Center is almost like on TV just before Christmas. The giant Christmas tree with about a million lights is standing there, like always. The ice skating rink is not as spontaneous as it seems though. It's not very big. People are waiting in line for hours before ... read more

After my sophmore year at UWEC Jordan, Brock, Jeff, Nate and I went on a road trip to the east coast where we went to 5 different MLB stadiums. We were in NYC for about 3 days and saw the Yankees and the Mets. We also got to walk around Manhattan a couple of days and we got to see the MLB Hall of Fame in Cooperstown which is located in upstate NY. My favorite part of the whole trip may have been when we were approaching NYC and we could see the skyline from like 40 min away . . . when we got to Manhattan we looked like fish out of water with 5 guys packed into a small 94 Dodge Shadow with Wisconsin plates.... read more
