Part I: Today's blog will be a continuous narrative in an effort to get to bed earlier! So as I type, we are on the bus headed to New York.
We began the day bright and early to breakfast, consisting of eggs, french toast, fruit, cereal, and toast. We departed from the hotel at about 7:45 and made our way to
Fenway Park! After arriving a few minutes early, we enjoyed a few jokes from one of the... more experienced Fenway employees 😊 Fenway is enjoying its centennial celebration this year and is the oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball. In addition to its 100
th birthday, the park also recently achieved status as a National Historic Building. The tour was a lot of fun, filled with several neat stories and details about the stadium that most probably don't know. Your homework today is to find out what the ladder in left field is used for and bonus points will be given for finding out where and why Morse Code is used in the park. The tour guide was very friendly and informative! He even took us into a memorabilia room filled with signed baseballs dating back to the early 1900's. The
elderly jokester from the fan shop even showed up with his two World Series rings! It was very cool! After taking roughly a million pictures, we left Fenway and headed across the street to do a little shopping at the team store and we did our best to help the team make their payroll!
It was then that we said our fond farewell to Boston. It was an exhausting, exhilarating, and educational couple of days and while we are sad to leave, we are very excited to see New York! Before the Big Apple however, these hungry Spartans needed food! So what does any good road-tripper do for lunch? Yep, fast food on the turnpike! This wasn't just a McDonald's and gas station however, this was a mega-truck stop with 6 different fast food restaurants. Several opted for Danielle's favorite pizza, Papa Gino's, which did not disappoint! Back on the road, we took the opportunity to relax and nap. After a quick stop for a brown squirrel emergency, we continued on to New York!
Part II: There are two things you can't control when traveling: weather and traffic, and both can have an enormous impact on your travels.
With that said, the weather was fantastic today, which leaves... yep, traffic... and lots... and lots of it. We left Boston at about 11:00 and after a stop for lunch and the, um... emergency stop, we finally made it to New York... for dinner... at 6:30. While frustrating, everyone stayed very positive and we were thrilled to see the magnificent New York skyline! Dinner was at
Dallas BBQ and believe it or not, New York has pretty respectable BBQ!
Once we finished dinner, we boarded the bus and headed off to the
Empire State Building. Talk about the VIP treatment! We had group reservations which enabled us to be whisked to the front of the line, and to the observation deck, which is the 86
th floor, in record time. It was awesome! Because we made such great time making it to the observation deck, we were able to watch the sunset. Did I mention the weather was incredible? Clear skies with high, thin clouds that made the views breathtaking. Once the sun set, the city lit up like a Christmas tree. It was gorgeous!
Boarding the bus for the hotel was done in record time and we thoroughly impressed Danielle with
our revolving door and bus loading skills! The drive back to the hotel was infinitely better than the drive to the city with no traffic!
While the day was consumed largely by traffic, we were so proud of our Spartans for keeping a great attitude and still managed to have a great time! And really, when you think about it, how bad could a day be that includes a tour of Fenway Park and watching the sunset on the Empire State Building?! All-in-all, it was pretty great.
We hope you've enjoyed today's entry and we hope you'll leave us a little note!
