We are up at around 07:30.We decided to have breakfast in our room as it had a small kitchen, we had been to a supermarket across the road from the hotel which is the most overstocked supermarket I have ever seen! We have Toast, Fruit, Coffee /Tea and are ready to go. We plan out the day, I have had a minor disaster with the formatting of the memory card in camera, which means that I have lost my photographs. So we decide to repeat the boat trip on the Hudson, so that I can retake the photos of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline. We have also have an helicopter ride booked for 14:15 and we also want to visit the Natural History Museum – quite a packed day!

We take the Metro and join the morning commuters getting packed into the carriages. The New York underground is fairly limited in that it tends to go from North to South with very little interconnecting lines. So it will get you to the general vicinity, and you need to walk or get a cab to get to your final destination.

We get off at Times Square, and spend some time watching the “Good Morning America” breakfast show being transmitted live from the sidewalk outside the studio. We then make our way to the pier and buy a ticket for the 11:00 sailing. We grab a coffee to kill some time, it is then I realise that I have left my photo I.D. back at the hotel. I will need this for the helicopter. So we need to return to the hotel before we go downtown for the helicopter ride – not having a good day!!

We take the Hudson boat ride, which is somewhat less crowded than the last time that we took it, and I managed to replace most of the photos that I had lost the previous evening due to my memory card problem. (The only one that I can’t replace is one that I took of two New Yorkers sitting on a bench reading – it was a good photo – but such is life!) As soon as we have finished the boat ride we grab a cab to go back uptown to get my photo ID. We then take the Metro all the way down Manhattan to the heliport terminal; despite being concerned about making the 13:45 check-in we are in good time. We check in and go through all the pre-check procedures and wait around for a while. Eventually we board the helicopter and take off for our 15 minute flight, although this seems a short time we cover all the major sightseeing points including; the Statue of Liberty, Financial area (Ground zero), Yankee Stadium, Central Park and may other sites. Diane is not too please when the pilot banks heavily towards the Hudson, but she survives! The Helicopter ride was excellent and we both enjoyed it, but you tend to be torn between taking photos/videos and enjoying the ride.

It is now mid afternoon and we want to take in the Natural History Museum before it closes 17:45. We head uptown on the Metro and arrive with about 2 ½ hours to take in the museum. This is nowhere near enough time to take in all the exhibits, so we decide to concentrate on just the Planetarium and the Dinosaur section. We book a time to see “Journey to the Stars’ in the Planetarium. The museum has some amazing exhibits and to do it justice you would need a full day there, we make the best of our allotted time and make our way back to the hotel to get changed for dinner.

We have a 20:00 booking at a place called Eataly, which is at 6th Avenue and 23rd Street. We grab a cab and make our way there. Our son Craig, who was in New York in January this year, has recommended this place. We arrive in good time and manage to get an earlier table (We don’t like eating too late!) This place is really neat –it is a huge space (looks like it could have been a department store at some stage). It is essentially a store selling Italian food and drink, but intermingled with the store are 5 Italian restaurants – pasta, fish, meat , vegetarian etc. It even has a class going on teaching Italian cooking. It is a unique concept. We are booked into the meat restaurant called Manzo. We have a really nice meal. We then make our way back to the hotel, we are both tired after an hectic day
