Metchen
At the train station. Getting a ticket to travel from Metuchen to Penn station at New York. $22 per head to and fro Balaji dropped us at the statation on the way to his office at 7am. Took the City Sights NY - Hop on - Hop off open bus conducted tour. Uptown followed by DownTown. Got out and took Statue of Liberty trip. After that took Brooklyn tour. Back to Pen station in the evening. Nandhini picked us up from Metchen.
The earlier part was bit windy and cold but it became very hot soon. Only after it cooled down in the evening went for my evening walk. Slept around 9 pm since did not take a nap from 4am.
Train Tickets. In the vending machine tickets and remaining change are dropped together. After going to the platform realized $2 change is missing. Went back to the vending machine and found the coins in the corner. Boarded the train which is not too great. Offered the tickets to the lady conductor/TTR. She made some punches in the ticket and then kept it with her. And took two strips of paper, punched holes in them and stuck them over the seat. I was tempted to take those strips because I became nervous as a ticket less passengers. How will I ever prove that

After an hour at Penn Station I bought the ticket and what if someone in the station ask me to show the ticket while going out of the station? The passenger next to me comforted me by saying nothing of that sort will happen. Then the strange thing happened. The TTR lady came back - presumably after completing the checking work - and TOOK BACK the strips of paper she had kept above the seat. God knows, why she kept them there if she is going to take them back! While returning we got into First Class AC compartment since we could not find any other class in the train! So again I was wondering about the penalty for travelling with second class ticket. I thought it is better to pretend as a season ticket holder rather than showing the ticket and getting caught. (TTR 'checks' only those passengers who offer to show the tickets. Most people do not even look at the TTR and continue their work on laptop and reading materials.) But finally found out that the ticket is same and no first class/ second class etc. Also there is no such thing as ticketless travel. Only thing is if you buy the ticket

Outside Penn Station, 33rd street with the Empire State Building in the background. in the train it is more costly than getting it from TTR. So the best option is not to buy tickets! One black tour guide was quite funny.
