Hello. Heather here. Colin mostly wrote our posts last trip so I am going to try and contribute more this time.
The rest of our time in New York was wonderful. I was so happy to show Colin around after being in the city by myself three times. On our second day we walked through Greenwich Village and the West Village and wandered the old narrow streets and alleys. We came across a bakery that is apparently famous for its cupcakes and for being on Sex and the City. We realized it was a tourist attraction after we came out and crossed the street into a park and looked around to see at least a hundred people eating cupcakes. We walked the new High Line to Chelsea afterward- very cool concept. For those of you who don’t know, the city took an old elevated rail line and turned it into a park. The views of the city are lovely, and it is nice to be able to walk above the streets on its artfully designed pathway, as well as to be able to just sit and watch the action below. Totally switching gears after that, we headed to a Mets
game in Queens, which was a lot of fun. It was bitterly cold and windy, but listening to the New Yorkers heckle while we drank Bud in the stands and ate hot dogs was a very American experience, plus riding the train above ground (it comes up after you cross the East River) to Queens is a completely different experience of being in the city than being underground.
After a great Italian dinner back in Kate’s neighborhood and a long visit with her, we went to bed only for me to wake up sick the next morning from getting so chilled at the game. I got through it, though, and on our third day we got in a ton of shopping. That night we went to Kate’s friend, Miriam’s, for dinner. We had planned to go out for dinner again, but she was nice enough to invite us over for dinner instead and I am so happy we decided to take her up on her offer. Not only was dinner delicious, but her apartment was amazing. She is in a corner suite on the 22nd floor of a high-rise on 96th and Lexington with views all the way past
Harlem into the Bronx and way across the river into Queens. It was breathtaking. We drank wine and port and had a long leisurely night with the city as our backdrop, hanging out in a way that you can’t experience if you don’t know someone when you are visiting a city. It was really perfect and the best way to spend out last evening I could have imagined.
On our last morning we grabbed food from the street market and had breakfast with Kate on the steps of Columbia before heading downtown again. We had shopped at the discount store Century 21 the day before (way way way downtown) and unfortunately we had to go back because Colin has some issues with sizing. The store is so crazy and busy that they don’t have change rooms, so some of his purchases were off... like way off. He somehow ended up with a pair of shorts that would have been large on an eight-year-old and undershirts that would have fit Heavy D. Colin is not an American size Large!!! After that we hit up MOMA, where we spent the rest of the day and could have easily spent much more.
We especially enjoyed watching Marina Abramovic and William Kentridge's work. We went back to Kate’s grabbed our stuff, had a quick goodbye, and headed for the airport, where we had what can only be described as the worst flight imaginable... but, I’ll save that story for another time.
ps- Sorry for the spelling errors- most of this is happening on an ipod touch very quickly.
pps- photos to come soon!
