Sculpture in front of the UN building. I tried to get the row of flags in the reflection.
Well... I woke up just a wee bit hungover, but nothing I can't handle. Proceeded to clean up in my swanky Waldorf-Astoria bathroom, complete with marble, glass shampoo bottle, full bar of soap, plush robe, etc. One goofy thing... The shower head is on the opposite wall of the tub/shower as the tub spigot is... So you pull the nob to switch the water over to the shower and you have to wait and listen while it works it's way over, around n' up the other side of the tub. And... As one might imagine, any temperature adjustments have to work their way around there too... This delayed reaction, combined with moderate hangover, resulted in a rather frustrating shower experience.
I did survive the shower though and called up the Bell Captain to put my luggage in cold storage while I wandered the town. Bags secure I hit the streets to find the Finnish embassy. It wasn't as obvious as I thought it'd be so I asked a guard at the UN who pointed me in the right direction. Acquiring my VISA took all of 5 minutes and I was off again to kill time in NYC until my flight
out at 2130.
Breakfast was at the Nations Cafe just outside of the UN Assembly complex. I had a California omelet... I'd never had avocado in an omelet and it sounded good... It wasn't too bad, but nothing to do more than blog about.
After breakfast I went to get a tour of the UN complex. After checking my cigar cutter with security (who knows what damage I could cause to international relations with that) I went inside and bought my ticket. The tour wasn't anything spectacular, mostly artwork donated to the UN by different countries and then the big event was getting inside the General Assembly room. Which by the way hasn't been in use for several months. If it were in use I'd have seen all the members as they were meeting at that time, but instead they were relegated to a room in the basement due to a pesky ceiling leak. Ironically, the leak seemed to be over the Malaysian table...
Done with the UN I walked the streets of Manhattan for a while and then signed up for an uneventful bus tour. Unfortunately I didn't have time to get off the bus, but
During my mad dash bus tour. Sorry, but another bad picture.
I drove by a lot of cool NYC things such as Times Square, Empire State, Ground Zero (but couldn't see it), etc. I guess I'll have to go to NYC again, but it really didn't excite me much... Not as busy as I thought it'd be and the people weren't rude either. It just wasn't what I thought, haha.
Eventually got my bags, headed to JFK and waited in the AA Admirals club for my flight to Heathrow. Flight went well... 777, good food, good booze, lots of sleep.
