It’s amazing the difference a day makes. Tuesday has the sun out and it’s set to be a fabulous day in New York., no more wild weather from Hurricane Nate. Mum and I headed out early for a visit to the Empire State Building. We’ve been waiting for a nice morning to go up to the 86 th floor to check it out the 360 degree views we get of New York. We’ve been keeping an eye on the tower from our appartment window and love the different colours it lights up at night. It was blue for the Yankees baseball game and red, green and white on Columbus Day. We get a grest view of the top of the tower from our bedroom window.
We decided to head to the American Museum of Natural History. You might know it from the 2006 movie ‘Night in the Museum’ staring Ben Stiller. We discovered they were having a Mummy exhibition, we’re both fascinated with anything Egyptian. The exhibition was the study of results for CT scans and X-rays completed on Mummy’s. We also enjoyed the Dinosaur halls featuring the skeletons and information on their extinction. You could easily spend days walking
around the museum it is so big.
Wednesday Mum and I travelled over the bridge to check out the Brooklyn Museum and Botanic Gardens. Although the Brooklyn museum was a lot smaller to the uptown museums we were impressed with their privately acquired Egyptian pieces and they currently had an exhibition of Animal Mummy’s that they had CT scans and X-rays on.
Behind the museum was the Botanic Gardens and it was lovely just wondering through discovering the Rose, Japanese Garden and Cherry Blossum tree lanes. At one stage we were being followed by the squirrels, they are everywhere.
After a morning sleep in and doing some domestic chores we decided to wonder around Central Park for the day. After buying a map of the park, aavoiding all the horse and cart hawkers we started into the corner at Columbus Circle. We didn’t get to far and noticed a film crew. I later found out it was for a new Woody Allen movie starring Selena Gomez. We got a coffee and sat on a rock for awhile in the sun watching all the comings and goings. The park is full of wildlife (not just the people) but
we got excited when we saw a fat raccoon. He was lovely and smiled at the camera for me.
Friday morning we caught the free Staten Island Ferry over to check out the Staten Island Mall ... Big Mistake!! We found too many fabulous bargains that wanted to come home with us. It didn’t help that the Mall had a Lego roadshow of American Landmarks and I wanted to check them out meaning we kept discovering new stores to go into. To revive before we headed back to the Island we popped into Applebee’s to try their $1 margaritas and have dinner.
It’s hard to believe we’ve been in New York for 2 weeks. Tonight Yvette and her mum arrive to join us for the next two weeks
