While Karen and I packed the coolers and cleaned up after breakfast, the guys went for a quick fish in the river. On the recommendation of Miss Elaine, We were heading up the Au Sable River to Lake Placid. The Ausable River, also known as AuSable River and originally written as "Au Sable", runs in the U.S. state of New York, from the Adirondack Mountains and past the village of Lake Placid and Au Sable Forks to empty into Lake Champlain. It has an East and West branch that join at Au Sable Forks. That is exactly where our house was located. As we drove up the Au Sable toward Lake placid we kept wondering where the attendees of the 84 Olympics spent the night. It’s fairly rural and accommodations were limited. Miss Elaine worked in ... read more

We drove to Lake Placid to check out the Olympic sites. We found the Olympic stadium and the winter sports museum. We paid and checked out the museum, then found the tourist bureau. After that we saw the ice rinks for the 1932 and 1980 (Miracle on Ice) hockey games. Also saw the outdoor speed ice skating rink that Eric Hayden skated on. We were bummed that it cost money to visit other Olympic sites (Whiteface Mountain and jumping complex) and decided instead to hike to Ampersand Mountain. Rick and Max made it to the top (1700 ft up, 5.4 miles round trip), but Maggie and Chrissy didn’t quite reach the top. All were exhausted. Went to eat at Little Italy (litaly) the first place we found in Saranak Lake. Delicious. The area we are staying ... read more

I've been feeling nostalgic lately, particularly for the north. I know it's freezing up there right now and it's not the temperature I'm missing, trust me! I miss this one summer in New York, up in Lake Placid. I went on a camping trip with some of my squad, stayed there for about a week and it was honestly one of my favorite memories. We went on about a 15-20 mile canoe ride, I can't remember! We went rock climbing, camped on a few different grounds, and some more challenging things like that which was great! But my favorite part of the trip would probably have to be the last day when we came back to the cabin at the main site and paddle boarded way early in the morning. It was a wonderful, serene way ... read more

More rain, this time in Lake Placid, NY. I went to the Olympic Museum and also walked around the Olympic Center. I saw a group practicing Synchronized Skating (like Synchronized Swimming, but with frozen water rather than liquid) in the arena, and a group practicing figure skating in another rink. After that I went to the library to sit down and do some planning for which hikes to do in the Adirondacks. The library is in a small building in the middle of the very busy Main St, so I was worried I would be able to find a quiet corner, but it turned out to be bigger on the inside than on the outside. I was able to find a nice quiet spot with a view of Mirror Lake where I could watch it rain. ... read more

FLAVOUR OF THE DAY: VITAMIN C, TYLENOL COLD & FLU, ADVIL We are both sick now. I have what Ian has had for the last week, and as usual it hit my chest and I've been out for the count for the last two days. Fortunately my Golden Arrow resort bed next to the window has a pretty lake outlook with lots of trees, and I awaken to birds singing their lovesongs. It could be worse. It could be Corner Brook! So, we've laid low, and ventured out only for a 5 minute walk here and there to stretch out the legs. This area is fantastic for the outdoors enthusiasts. We've seen countless athletes training for the marathon and half this Sunday, as well as watched swimmers in the lake then get onto bikes training for ... read more

Its important to take the time to cherish the simple pleasures along the way. Enjoying a breakfast on the outside deck of a simple bakery with a river directly below. Sunshine, rushing water lapping over smooth rocks and sitting beside a covered bridge, how often is this going to happen. No particular place to go. So lets just go. West. We left New Hampshire and entered Vermont. If you can picture the Saanich peninsula with 50 "Prairie Inns" along the way plus a winding slow running river and a town made up of a school a general store and a cemetary every 5 minutes. Thats our Vermont so far. Its seems as though it is repetative but never the same. Bikes, bikes and more bikes. We are seeing more motorcycles along the way. As we continue ... read more
