Closure--- Arriving into ABQ around 9:45pm (sans packs---do they personify our feelings of maybe not quite being ready to face reality??) In closing this blog out, we’ve been reflecting on some things we’d like to share with you. The now fading memory of all those big smiles on some of the poorest people in the world (Nepal is the 2nd poorest nation in the world—average annual income at $250). We hope that we’ve left them with an equally warm sense of graciousness they showed us. Deep reflections on life’s priorities when we come home to our fast paced Western mode (add the holiday consumer rat race—whoa Bessie). Tim had rickshaws running around his sleep last night, we’re all in that time-warp fog. It was wonderful to read everyone’s comments---this was a trip of a lifetime we ... read more

The past two days have seen a flurry of last-minute-before-the-trip activitiy. I've actually been packed for a week (although I did make a few changes this morning) -- the three photos accompanying this entry illustrate how I'm trying to pack more lightly from now on. Other than cramming all of my "necessities" in one carry-on-approved combination rolling dufflebag/backpack plus a messenger bag-style camera/electronic gear satchel, the most important pre-trip task was the traditional vacation haircut. My hair grows very quickly (and begins to curl terribly the longer it gets); I also hate going to the barber so a trip is usually the catalyst for me doing this dreaded chore. I did this deed yesterday (a warm, why-am-I-the-only-one-wearing-a-jacket, kind of day) and ended up getting my hair cut shorter than ever before -- I'd asked the barber ... read more

I've created a couple of maps for my upcoming London trip. The first shows the route of flights from Albuquerque to London. It looks like I'll be traveling 10,434 air miles on this journey (not to mention getting to and from airports, hotels, etc.). The second map shows how far south of London that Gatwick Airport really is. The best way into the city seems to be the Gatwick Express up to Victoria Station. Express Class costs £13.00 ($22.32) one-way or £24.00 ($41.21) return; First Class runs £20-£38 ($34.35-65.26). Since it's not part of the London Transport system, my all-region pass doesn't cover the trip from the airport (but I can use it to my heart's content once I get within the Home Counties). There are also a number of airport shuttle companies, but the one ... read more

Any trip I take seems to entail way too many preparations in the weeks before departure and my upcoming December journeys are proving to be no exception. The easy part is actually finished once I've decided where I'm going and have booked the plane and hotel reservations. Those steps, for me, actually take about a week of research -- where do I want to go? what's the least expensive way to get there? what's the least expensive, but still comfortable, place to sleep there? Once all the transportation and accomodation arrangements have been made, the "real" work begins. The first matter involves luggage. It seems like whenever I return from any trip, I decide my bags aren't good enough for the next one. I've essentially been searching for the "perfect" piece of luggage for the past ... read more

First entry here, from my "home base" in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Hot Air Ballooning Capitol of the Southwest (if not the world, but I'm a bit biased). It's a bit after 4:00 in the morning with a temperature of 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Should be a beautiful day with the high reaching the mid-60's. In another hour or so, the sun will peak over the crest of the Sandia Mountains to the east. Sandia means "watermelon" in the local Tewa tribal language and the mountains really do look like a wedge of watermelon when the sun hits them just right. A bit about myself as a way of introduction: I love to travel. Of course I do, or I wouldn't be here. I caught the "armchair traveler" bug very early. Growing up, my family took many vacations ... read more

After leaving the cowboy camp we continued south, through Phoenix and Tucson to the famous town of Tombstone where we explored the gunslinger related history of the town. Afterwards, we a had a long evening drive (240 miles) into New Mexico where we set up camp and ate Fitz's Jambalaya (a taste of things to come).... read more

My father was waiting for me to get home on Thursday afternoon after another wild day as Mr. Steer the Substitute. He claimed he had a surprise for me over the weekend, and what do you know, he did not disappoint. We got in the car Friday morning at around 6AM and drove. I mean DROVE! For 16 straight hours; 2 movies, 3 hours of Rush Limbaugh, the Dan Patrick show on ESPN Radio, and about 75 old school rocks songs...11PM that night, we pulled into the middle of nowhere in New Mexico and called it a night. The next morning was amazing. We got up at 7AM and drove straight to the fly fishing hotel where our guide Mark was waiting for us. We sped over to the put in of the San Juan River, ... read more

We had a long travel day today. We drove from OKC to Roswell, NM which is roughly 460 miles but a lot of the day we were on a small highway that went through a lot of small towns in Texas and New Mexico. So we didn't drive over 60 m.p.h. for a lot of the trip. The scenery totally changed today....a lot of WIDE open spaces, ranches, windmills, cows and trains. We left OKC around 6:30am and arrived in Roswell around 2:00pm. We ate lunch at the "Nuthin' Fancy Diner" in Roswell which is famous around here because President George W Bush got some carry out and did a campaign stop here during the last presidential campaign. They had a lot of pictures of "W" and his visit and an autographed menu. They also have ... read more

04/09/05 Las Vegas (no not that one) We left Amarillo via Cadillac Ranch, where 10 pink Caddies are planted bonnet deep in a row in the middle of a field, it's not at all surreal really! Many visitors have added grafitti to the cars and if you look closely you may find our own little stamp on one of them (hint: see photos). A further four hours on the road got us into New Mexico where the land became a lot more lumpy, we stopped at the Plaza hotel in Las Vegas after a recommendation from a traveller who we met in a Visitor Centre on the border, it is an old place with wonky floorboards, a resident ghost and connections to some of the famous names of the wild west. We had a pleasant meal ... read more
