Hi from Ruidoso, up in the mountains of the Lincoln National Forest, where we're enjoying a few days away from the rigours of riding in the Chihuahuan desert! It's a different world up here at 6,500ft, with pine trees, cool air and tons of ski and snowboarding outfittters. Just a couple of days ago we were toiling away past the gleaming dunes of White Sands National Monument, with temperatures in the low 90s, yet yesterday we were donning hats and warm jackets as we crested a 9,000ft pass. We've been very fortunate here in Ruidoso to enjoy a couple of nights' accommodation free of charge in a motel run by our Warm Showers host Lisa, from Las Cruces. Lisa was kind enough to host us in her little adobe house in Las Cruces for 2 nights ... read more

Our base in New Mexico was Ruidoso, a small town in the Sierra Blanca mountains. From there we had some great days out, but there was also quite a lot for us to explore within easy reach of Liz and Steve's cabin. The cabin itself was wonderful. It's one of life's pleasures to soak in a hot tub on the terrace, sipping a cold bottle of beer while watching the hummingbirds come and go! We found the town of Ruidoso quite charming. It's full of lovely little shops selling all sorts of tempting gifts. Wooden carvings are prolific and feature bears, eagles and aliens. There are some great art and furniture stores too. It's just a shame that we didn't have enough room to bring the things back that we would have bought. Still, we're not ... read more

NOT MUCH MARY ANN In what was clearly an act of cowardice Billy the Kid, that blood-thirsty little weasel and thief, was with a group of pals who murdered Sheriff Brady and Deputy Hindman from ambush in Lincoln, NM on April 1, 1878. They then scampered off to join up with the rest of the Tunstall Regulators for further misdeeds. During the afternoon of April 4 all sixteen of them led by Dick Brewer rode into Blazer’s Mill for lunch at Mrs. Godfroy’s little restaurant. Doc Blazer operated a sawmill and a gristmill serving the Mescalero Reservation there and her husband, Frederick Godfroy, was the Indian Agent. The mills were a handy stopping place for travelers on the route between Tularosa and Lincoln. Mrs. Godfroy served them good meals at the agency ... read more

JAILBREAK billythe Kid, that little weasel, was fond of gambling and dancing and the Mexican girls adored him, but he didn’t like to work. To support himself and his vices he was a thief. In August of 1877, at age 17, he murdered a man named Windy Cahill at Fort Grant, AT and then skipped over the line to New Mexico and fell in with Jesse Evans and his merry band of rogues. Evans admired Billy’s spunk, but his boys were seasoned outlaws that had little use for nursemaiding such a lazy youngster and in fairly short order Billy found himself on the discard heap with them. After further hardening among the rough elements around Seven Rivers Billy found himself in the clutches of an Englishman in Lincoln County named John Tunstall. Tunstall was ... read more

Saturday August 13 Ruidoso and then back to my free dispersed camping campsite in the Lincoln National Forest , South Fork campground area. I had a full day in Ruidoso. I went to the Hubbard Museum of the American West which was supposed to have a display of Western Paintings but it had been canceled to my great disappointment, Then the Billy the Kid Visitor Center which has a museum on the Lincoln County wars, and the Ruidoso River museum which has a floor of exhibits on the Lincoln County Wars as well as other exhibits on other floors and outside. Then I went to one of the Casino’s here to see if they had a good buffet but they didn’t so I left. After that I drove up to the top of the 10,000 feet ... read more

While I was home in Phoenix in November/December I thought I'd be staying there until April or so, but Seaver called me to come back to work in New Mexico. There was opportunity for advancement in this small company and I would be the most experienced instructor. The schedule would be different now…instead of 16 days on and 12 days off we were going to 8 days on and 6 days off so there would be more continuity in instructors. On top of that there were only going to be 4 instructors, and the partner you got was the one you kept. At first I was pretty skeptical about the schedule, but after doing it for almost 4 months now…I think it's better for the kids and the program. With only 6 days off my travel ... read more

It was the beginning of Spring Break and we wanted to find an easy destination to go to. Why not Ruidoso, New Mexico? Ruidoso is a mountain resort town in the south central section of New Mexico. It is a popular destination for Texans who want to escape the summer heat and enjoy the alpine scenery. The Mescalero Apache operates a hotel casino - Inn of the Mountain Gods - and a ski resort right outside of Ruidoso. Our journey took us through Alamogordo and Tularosa, NM - known for their speed traps. A friendly advice - stay within the speed limit especially if you have a Texas plate. There was also a border checkpoint before Alamogordo. After all, this is the corridor for illegal immigrants coming through Mexico. We noticed the presence of sheriffs, in ... read more

Day 18 July 21 Colorado Springs to Ruidoso We drove to Ruidoso. Very uneventful except for a stop at a roadside park where I found a cell phone. I called the listing for Mom and mailed it to her so she could send it back to her son who was on his way to take his wife to a doctor in Mexico. It felt so good to get back to Ruidoso. They had a lot of rain so everything was very wet. For several days we just laid around except for a trip to Alamogordo to see Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D. It was a lot of fun. We also went to The Annual Ruidoso Art Show and saw a lot of interesting works. Saturday, July 26, we drove to Dallas to ... read more

We arrived on July 28 bringing in rain with us. The area had been under a drought and had closed the Lincoln National Forest. We were relieved to hear it was opening on July2. Linda, Paul, Rocky and Tribble joined us on July 2 very early in the morning. Paul's parents, Julie and Derek arrived on July 3. Maggie and Rosie are staying with Linda and Paul. It was a big decision for us but its hard to travel in the summer with dogs. I'm sure they will have a lot of fun with Rocky and Tribble and learn a lot from Linda the Dog Whisperer.... read more
