New Mexico Hwy 518 runs from Taos South to Las Vegas and all my pics are from there. Coming from the Rio Grande Gorge I started on NM 518 about 15 miles South of Taos and finally made it to Las Vegas. My first visit there was in the 1980s when things were different and that highway was New Mexico Hwy 3. I included some of my old pics in the 1980s shot on my 135 mm SLR on print film. This blog is about me finding a private camp on the Rio Pueblo; virtually all my pics are shot there except the few last shot in Las Vegas. I arrived at my very old camp that is Comales Camp Ground by the confluence of the small Comales creek. These pics are from the 1980s when ... read more

COMING HOME DAY 30: MAY 21, 2013 I woke up to a howling rain squall in Amarillo and did not find a breakfast place at all. In fact, I did not find anywhere to eat in all of Texas. By the time I got to Clayton, New Mexico it was lunchtime so I found a place called the Rabbit Ears Café and gave their Mexican entrees a try. It was the only place other than fast food that I found. Their Mexican food was pretty bad and they charged extra for the chips and salsa. Twin Peaks Clayton, NM is the little town where the outlaw Black Jack Tom Ketchum was hanged for train robbery. The good citizens of Clayton had never had to hang anyone before and they had ... read more

From Megan's point of view: We woke up today with the sun shining and hardly any clouds in the sky. We didn't go to to the brewery and decided to just get out of town and to Fort Union New Mexico. A few miles from Fort Union, we started to see lightning and heard thunder. We pulled off the freeway and started heading toward the fort and the storm. When we arrived, you could see the forts and the storm heading towards us. As we got inside, the ranger told us to take caution if we are going out, and go at your own risk. We decided to try to go through the fort and make it before the storm came in. About halfway there, the thunder and lightning was right by the fort. My papa ... read more

Las Vegas, NM: Where the adventure began (part I) Just like everything else in this universe, or multi-verse, depending on your school of thought, there is a spark that ignites a person’s passion for travelling. The spark that ignited my interest occurred in an unforgettable series of circumstances which unexpectedly led me and my wife to Las Vegas, New Mexico. This is my story… December 30, 2004 – It was the night before our trip to California. This will be our first time visiting my parents via the Amtrak Southwest Chief – a 36 hour train ride from Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, California with stops at cities in the states of Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. We made all necessary preparations two weeks in advanced. However, no amount of preparation could have ... read more

After all that Toby Keith excitement I wasn't sure if we would be able to sleep last night but we did and it was great. We actually slept until 9:00 which is kinda late for us while we're on the road but we can now officially say that we have "slept underneath that Amarillo sky" just like the country music song. We didn't have a whole lot planned for the day and it was a good thing because we ended up wasting about three and a half hours trying to get the computer fixed. After we got our showers and ate breakfast we decided to go on over to Palo Duro Canyon State Park and check it out first. It's in the book and so we wanted to see what it was all about. Once we ... read more

Was fuer ein schoenes, gut erhaltenes, altes Dorf. Beim Reinfahren faellt uns auf, dass es hier keine Fastfoodkette zu geben scheint. Den ... read more

Las Vegas rests beneath the gentle shadow of the Sangre de Christo mountains, a small, vibrant city on the edge of rolling green-gold prairie, a city whose land speaks of fire-roasted chile and reflected sun. The scent of juniper and piñon welcomes you to a tree-lined city that ranchers, artists, and families who have lived here for hundreds of years call home. Beautiful music - from the plucked strings of a Mariachi's guitarrón to the elegant classical voices of the New Mexico Highlands University choir - often echos from the Plaza Park's gazebo as local dancers salsa and two-step during cool summer evenings. A stroll through the Arts and Cultural District reveals an array of aesthetic riches - from carved wooden saints and softly painted retablos, to bold modern offerings from new, up-and-coming artists. Authentic and ... read more
