I picked up Katherine at the train station at 8:55 sharp (go Amtrak!). We drove about 20 minutes to Rosedale Park in Pennington, NJ to hike Mercer Meadows, a wonderful complex of trails through preserved farmland, full of meadows that have been restored to their original, natural state (all invasives removed). It spans the old 812 acre AT&T pole farm, which transmitted calls from all over the U.S. to Europe. No more poles, but some interesting historical markers of the transmission center, which functioned from 1928 until 1963. It was a cool day and we hiked 5 miles from Rosedale Park to Lawrenceville, where we broke for lunch and then hiked back. Both of us hiked with full packs (at about 15 pounds with water). We were pleasantly surprised at the end of the hike that ... read more

Thanks to my awesome husband, I am all packed for China! It was tricky only having 40 pounds to work with, especially since I am a compulsive over-packer and I had to fit over 10 pounds worth of gifts from Lawrence schools in my suitcase as well. Luckily my husband is an amazing packer, and got everything to fit and the waiting begins! Our flight leaves Wednesday around noon, so only a few days to go.... read more

Hola y bienvenidos a mi TravelBlog! Less than 2 days until my week in Honduras! I am so excited to share my journey with everyone again, so please subscribe to get email updates! The Villa Soleada Children's Home for Girls is almost ready to be opened, but they are still accepting donations! I am almost halfway to my goal of $300. If you haven't already, please consider making a small donation via my Project Page at: http://www.ceciskids.org/fundraising/profile.php?id=1244 My trip this year will be extra special, as I will be joined by 2 of my former students from Lawrence Middle School. I can't wait for them to experience such an amazing adventure, and know that the work they will be doing will help make a huge contribution to the lives of some wonderful Honduran families. In addition ... read more
The official dress hand off- Oso was excited too!

So I have been home for almost a week now, and while it is nice to be back in the air conditioning, I think often of my experiences in Honduras. My time there helping others will always remain an important part of me, as well as the families and friends that have touched my life. My mosquito bites and sunburn are a constant reminder of an unforgettable week, and I love that I already have many Honduran friends on Facebook. My last day in Honduras was Saturday. I was psyched to wear my new soccer jersey that I had bought at the market on Thursday. While eating my breakfast, Sentella came in to visit, and excitedly I picked her up and passed my camera off for a picture. I guess she was excited too, as she ... read more

Two days from now I will be arriving in Honduras. I can't believe the time is almost here! I have everything I need (I think) and my clothing is being pre-treated for protection against skeeters and buggies. Vaccinations are up-to-date, preventive medication picked up, and I have my travellers insurance. I would also like to give a HUGE THANK YOU to the following people who have helped to support my effort in raising money for Villa Soleada Elementary School and those who contributed to my trip. I have raised close to $600! Things are finally starting to come together! I have almost everything I need for my trip, now just need to pack it all! My donation bag of school supplies is bursting at the seams, but I can't wait to give all of the markers, colored pencils, crayons, folders, etc to the kiddos in El Progreso. I also have a stack of letters that my 7th graders wrote to the children in Honduras. I have posted some pictures below.... read more

Good evening everyone, another update for you! We are in a little hotel in a small place called Lawrenceville after a busy and very picturesque few days along the Atlantic Coast. After a very tedious three hours spent in a Washington Laundromat we managed to get on the road and head for Ocean City, on a small penisular South East of Washington. It was a really nice drive through the Maryland and Delaware countryside and we passed a lot of small farmers stalls selling fruit and veg and lots of small, typical American neighbourhoods (they are so patriotic with almost every house flying a stars and stripes flag or three from their porches!) Another highlight was crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge onto Kent Island , it was over 4 miles long and its quite an experience ... read more
