Waking early, we wound our way through the tunnel from the Hilton back into Chicago O'Hare airport. We checked in, got some breakfast and boarded our AA flight to Laguardia. All went ok and soon we were driving our Hertz car out of New York and into New Jersey.

We had reserved a hotel room for two nights at the Holiday Inn Express Meadowlands. As it was on the way from New York to the funeral parlour, we briefly stopped - they were nice and allowed us early checkin - and dropped our bags.

Driving onward we reached the funeral home with a little time to spare. A couple of family members spoke about Marian, most notably her daughter Marcy and granddaughter Haley.

From the funeral parlour the cars drove in convoy to the cemetery grounds for the burial. Considering that there had been recent rain and very cold temperatures, the weather and the ground conditions were not so bad at the site.

Years ago both Marcy and her sister Alyse - Marian's only two children - had moved away from New Jersey. Lacking one of their homes to sit shiva, we proceeded to the house of some long-term friends of Alyse. The mood was subdued with upbeat reminiscing about Marian and her passing. We stayed for several hours and caught up with Alyse's children and their families. Of course we had just seen Marcy's children and grandson at Ben's wedding.

Despite the food we had eaten at the shiva house, we went for a simple dinner at the Jerusalem Restaurant on the way to our hotel. Finally we calmed down enough from all the rushing around and went to sleep.
