We left St Andrews this morning and travelled through the beautiful state of Maine after crossing the US border again. The lady at the border was obviously bored as we were the only ones there and asked us all sorts of questions including perplexing ones like whether we had bought souvenirs like t-shirts and magnets in Canada. Go figure!
We saw some deer feeding on the outskirts of the forest on the way which was a pleasant surprise and added to the gorgeous countryside which was again dotted with lakes and rivers and elaborate houses with attached barns.
We reached our condominium in the White mountains just after lunch and ventured down to have a look at the outlet stores which were just down the road. Most of the merchandise at the stores was 70% off for the Memorial day weekeend so Ross managed to pick up a lot of clothes at Van Heussen for next to nothing and I got a nice leather handbag.
I had left my camera at the condo so of course on the way back when we drove up the end of the road that the resort is on to see what was there we came
across a mother black bear and her two cubs. They were feeding on the side of the road near an unoccupied house and were so close that I could have gotten some fantastic photos. The cubs scrambled up trees and chased after their mother when she went towards the house. We raced back to get the camera but of course they were gone when we got back. They are the first bears we have seen on this side of the country and they were much smaller than the black bears we saw in Banff.
The condo we are staying in is spacious and very comfortable. It is in a complex of 4 buildings and has a balcony which looks out over the forest and surrounding mountains with an amazing view.
We were sitting on the balcony this evening having a glass of wine and, fulfilling another of my 'wish list' items, a Hummingbird flew up through the bars on the balcony railing and hovered right in front of me. It was just amazing.
We went for a walk later into the forest surrounding the condo but didn't spot anything else. There are a lot of trails around here so hopefully we will get
some more decent weather to go exploring. Today was mostly fine but the forescast for tomorrow is not so good. We are heading up to Mt Washington to see the views and maybe do some hiking.
