It was a big day of driving so we wanted to get an early start. Levi was the first one up about 7:20. He had only been up once in the night and didn't really need anything, just some reassurance and refill of water (even though he wasn't out). We were on the road about 9:30. It was a little later than we hoped, but it would work. Sarah sat in the back with Paul for the first parts of the drive to help him with homework. Our first stop was the Bonneville Salt Flats rest stop just east of Wendover, UT. We played in the salt for awhile and drew some pictures in the salt. The boys tried to use their sand toys, but the salt was a little too hard. It had been ... read more

In the last decade, I’ve been to Vegas more than several times—and Reno not at all. In my mind the two were nearly equated, with Reno simply as a smaller version of Vegas. At first glance, it is. The casinos look the same, and sound the same, though even Harrah’s is much smaller than most casinos in LV. In general, the same demographic is to be found, generally older, generally white, generally middle class. But something about Reno feels…not exactly "gentler", but more human. Women aren’t hawked endlessly on little cards passed out by blank-faced little Aztecs. The wastrels in the streets, lighting cigarettes and scooping you out as you walk by feel less desperate. The air is gentle and the light is warm: the Truckee River runs through the middle of town: kayakers paddle it ... read more

406 am: I woke up, the other bed was empty. I considered getting alarmed, but then, this is Little Vegas. There’s nothing too odd or alarming about my sister being out past 4 am. 553 am: I woke up to a commotion in the room next door. Laying quiet I listened, trying to categorize the sounds. It sounded like senior citizens getting rowdy—the muffled sounds that penetrated the walls sounded a lot like the noises on our chartered flight to Reno. The shrill amped-up laughter was that of nice older ladies gone bad, up till dawn working the slots and drinking G&Ts. I considered getting annoyed, but then, this is Little Vegas. This is life asserting itself. It is my reserved and orderly sister sitting all night at poker tables, disregarding the carb count of the ... read more

Day 1 - A Day of Travel I was a little concerned about the Swine Flu outbreak as the days grew closer for my flight to Reno. If you are going to catch an airborne virus, the best place is an airplane where you are breathing the same air over and over again. I decided that if I boarded the plane and saw no pigs, I was good to go. There were no pigs, unless you count the big fat man that barely fit down the isle. One of he reasons I love to travel is because I love to watch and study people. So after arriving in Reno and picking up my rental SUV, I headed straight for Wal-Mart. Is there any better place to watch people and learn about the area? I think not! ... read more

Hello from somewhere between Reno, Lake Tahoe and Carson City, NV! I really wish I knew where I was right now, but I won't dwell on the fact that I have no clue where I am as it's really not that important. I am going to attempt to sum up my life in a few paragraphs, however the insane lifestyle that I am currently living might be too hard to put into comprehensible words. Currently I am working with chainsaws removing fuels for forest fires in a park over looking Lake Tahoe, NV. Thats right, my job is using a chainsaw to cut brush and fell trees 6,000ft above sea level in one of the most beautiful places in the world, Lake Tahoe. My work week is Monday - Thursday, giving me a wonderful 3 day ... read more

This trip to Lake Tahoe started in Reno, a rustic city surrounded by spectacular desert. After landing in Reno, we picked up the rental car and headed south. Our first stop was a scenic overlook with some great desert views. Next, we stopped in Virginia City, an old mining town up in the hills. Virginia City is basically one main drag with many 19th century boom-day buildings, like you see in the movies. There are shops, a mining museum that takes you down the old mine shafts, and some casinos and restaurants. We stroll through the downtown and stop for lunch. Next, we head down to Carson City, the capitol of Nevada. We visit the Capitol Building, a Victorian structure with a nice, relaxed western flair, before moving on to our destination of South Lake Tahoe, ... read more

Hey, everyone! This is pretty exciting, writing the first entry in the Clements' Travel Times! Thank you in advance for taking the time to read it! Friday morning we drove to Red Rock Canyon. It's a U.S. Conservation area, so our National Park pass was good there. We took the scenic, one-way loop which is a little over 11 miles with places to pull off at different points of interest and information about what you are seeing. We found out that some of those interesting rock formations were sand dunes once upon a time! The weather was nice, the air clear and it was very quiet, especially after all the casino noise. If you are a hiker or rock climber, this is a place for you. Even though there are wild horses and burros, the pictured ... read more

Just 3 more days until I leave for Amsterdam... can't wait! Just bought travel insurance and have slowly been acquiring all of the items I think I will need for my trip. Past experience has taught me that you always pack too much stuff and never remember to pack something important. Oh-well!... read more

Just got back from Reno, NV. Went to Donner Memorial and then went swimming in Lake Tahoe. A great experience, the water was cold but crisp and sweet. Went to Virginia City, had read a Mark Twain book about it, found it very interesting and people (visitors and townspeople) quite decent. Rode the train and train ride was about the correct length, not too long and not too short. The car musuem was full of interesting cars, was a bit too much for me though may have been about right for a real gearhead. Lost a bit in the casinos. Great trip. Room was cheap, from Hotwire was $36.00 per night for weekend nights in a Holiday Inn. I got an Enterprise car, walked from airport down to their outlet, saved about $40.00 for a 3 ... read more

As I had to return the rental to Salt Lake City I got away from my sisters place about lunch time (she also had to go to work) and made my way over the Sierra Nevadas to Reno where I planned on staying for the night. And as it has a bunch of casinos there I thought it would be a good place to make my riches, just like everybody else. Except for 2 small problems, I can't afford to give lots of money to the casinos and I have a very short attention span with casinos. Reno is a bit like a small version of Las Vegas, flashy city centre and crappy everything else. Like las Vegas it attracts the rich and the poor who want to be rich. It seems to to have an ... read more
