We are clearly not the hardened travellers that used to be. Once upon a time a night bus was regarded with excitement. Nowadays with memories of refridgeration in Thailand and of sharing the back seat with fat snoring men in China, we look upon them as an evil necessity. Add to the mix Americans, and suddenly it could be the worse journey ever. Greyhound buses have quite a bad reputation in the US and understandably so. We rocked up mid town LA to get the bus at 11. At 9 they turf you out of the station to wait outside the depot amongst the crack dealers that sleep rough. Next we were told (by the staff) not to walk outside the station in downtown LA when we arrived to change buses because we would get shot..... ... read more

Bears in Yosemite and Vegas or bust Yosemite National Park was absolutely stunning, definitely worth seeing. Did some hiking and bear spotting, saw 3 bears walk across the trail less than 10 yards from me yesterday, amazing. They weren’t at all interested in me which was good as I didn't fancy fighting off 3 of them at once. The hiking is pretty cool, did 2 long day hikes in the Park, views are amazing with the towering sides of the valley, Half dome looming over one end and the waterfalls streaming down the sides. Hiking out of the valley is fun as most of the routes are just switchback tracks up the almost sheer sides of the valley till you get near the top when you can traverse around or head away from the main valley. ... read more

Day 134: Tuesday, Oct 3: Cape Town Table Mountain was closed today due to the winds, so I took to the streets and checked out the city. Started with the city center with all the government buildings and museums. Then headed across to Signal Hill and climbed about half way up to get good shots of the city and clear shots of table mountain. Walked back to the hotel where we grabbed some lunch. After lunch, we headed back to the hostel and I grabbed my bags and took a taxi to my new digs. The ArabellaSheraton Grand Hotel in Cape Town. This was a really nice hotel. Almost as nice as the Le Meridian in Vienna. I got a King Size bed on the 14th floor overlooking the Waterfront. I went down to a German ... read more

I've been a bit slack with keeping everyone updated on our whereabouts so here is the much awaited for update. We left our hosts Jan & Bob's house on Tuesday last week and made our way to Vegas. We hadn't managed to get the tow hitch done while we were there so Russ drove the motorhome and I left about an hour later and drove the Durango. I left at about 5pm so I hit a bit of traffic heading out of the city but it was smooth sailing all the way to Vegas after that. I really enjoyed the scenery this time as it was dusk and the colours in the sky were just beautiful. Russ said that he was getting buses passing him going up the hills but he was still beating the trucks ... read more

Las Vegas is not a place I could live. Not for a long period of time, anyway. I've noticed a ton of differences between here and Michigan or Ohio. Or any other place I've lived, for that matter. First and foremost, people seem to breed here--quite early. I'm getting quite sick of questions about my (non-existant) kids and my (non-existant) husband. I realize that these questions aren't meant to annoy me, but about half of these people think I look 16, too. So, what is it? Do I look like a fabulous who has clearly been swept already? Or do I look like a stupid whore? I can't figure it out, but I hope it's the first. Secondly, Vegas and Flint seem very similar in a lot of respects (bear with me on this one). Flint ... read more

So after San Francisco, Jime and I had a bit of time ........ sweet ....... so it was off to Vegas. I had an appointment here with 'my list of things to do before im 30' and Jime was keen to check it out, so a road trip to Vegas was the call. After an amazing 4 hour drive thru the scorching desert, Vegas jumped outta nowhere ....... Crazy ..... 3 hours of desert then Vegas ....... Woooooo Dude. After a not so quick drive up the main drag I realised my perception of this place was screwed, I was totally blown away, so flippen big and everything had so much money poured into it ....... Im not even gonna try explain. So we picked the Luxor out of the many hotels for our accom and ... read more

If we were to compile a must see before you die list, Vegas would be on it! This place is truly amazing - admittedly not to everyone's taste I'm sure - but it has to be seen to be believed. The main strip in Vegas is made up of numerous hotels/casino's, each one having its own particular theme - New York New York for example which is essentially a miniture version of New York city encapsulated by a huge rollercoaster. Our personal favourite was the Venetian which was a mini Venice, complete with its own canal network and piazzas with artificial skies painted on the ceilings. We did manage some low value backpacker budget gambling - Paul managed to convert his $1 into an impressive $11.11 by the end of the evening. The highlight of out ... read more

I'll be perfectly up front with you now. There will be nothing spectacular about this post. I didn't actually even make it to the mountain. I am just a little too under the weather. But I think I may have taken some interesting pictures. Enjoy! Also, I'm missing Japan all of a sudden. I want to take in a tea ceremony. Haha. And go to Nara, because I haven't yet. And Ise. Bah. Brooke and her roommate Shannon got back to the hotel room around 2am. They were out walking The Strip and their feet were as black as tar. Everyone slept well into Saturday morning, as we were all so tired. For me, it was like being invited to a teenage schoolgirl’s slumber party, except it isn’t teenage girls that we had here. Shannon had been working in the summer camps, Rachel was a Pom, her roommate Kylie was from Brisbane and then there was Brooke…the Cheeky Chook from the West. Brooke’s usual roommate on this tour deserted her for an upgrade to the swish Bellagio Hotel/Casino. After spending nearly three weeks away from home, all I can say is that a bed is more than enough to satisfy my needs! We all had breakfast at Coco’s ... read more
