DC to Vegas

This is VegasThis is VegasThis is Vegas

You've all seen this sign, but we thought we'd put it here anyway.
This is turning out to be a trip of contrasts.

After a week in the busy Apple and a few days in the more sofisticated DC, we've now spent a week in Vegas, with a couple of days on the road to see Grand Canyon and Death Valley (we'll write about this in separate posts).

Vegas is a bit of a disappointment. We thought is was going to be even more surreal than what it actually is. The Strip, or Las Vegas Boulevard as it's actually called, is littered with flashy casinos/hotels (to get to the front desk you have to get through a maze of gaming opportunities - do they want you to go bust before you even check in?), and every 3-4 blocks there's a deserted plot of land or a building site.

Our hotel, the Sahara, built in 1952, is one of the classics. Elvis and The Beatles among others have stayed here. The age of the place shows a bit and it's not as current as the MGM or New York New York for example.

Our first room, on the 3rd floor, facing the monorail station that runs along the strip, didn't have

a working shower. Also, it was a smoking room. Not a very good start. Only for one night though. The next morning we moved up to the 24th floor, with a very nice view of Vegas. The first few days we spent walking up and down the strip, having a meal here and a drink there. There are lots of places we never managed to go near even! (We did manage to go to Coyote Ugly, at New York New York - disappointingly, no dancing on the bar!)

Speaking of drinks - the legal age to buy drink in a restaurant in Nevada is 21. H had to show a photo ID to be served a beer. You bet she smiled the rest of the evening...

After a few days on the strip we took a day off by the pool, to work on our (until now non-existent) tans. Nice!

As a last attempt to do something interesting we went to MGM, as we've heard they had lions there, as they should - it is MGM after all. Well, there they were, in a glass cage, with hundreds of spectators taking pictures. Luckily the lions are only

on the 24th floor. A bit better than the view of the monorail station outside our 3rd floor room (the first night).
there 4 hours at a time, one day a week, and spend the rest of the time on a ranch outside Vegas.

So, what do we think about Vegas? Well, it's cool to have been here. Are we going back? Doubt it. Overpriced (we were told Vegas was dirt cheap), overrated and lots of lonely, lost souls.

Now, we're off to LA.

(Don't forget to read about our Grand Canyon and Death Valley trip though and have a look at all the pics below.)

Ingen vidare bra start. (Vi lycakdes doch ga till Coyote Ugly, pa New York New York - tyvarr forekom inget dansande pa bardisken!)

Of course there are canals in the desert. Vegas had to have its own piece of Italy...and so does California. More about that in a later blog.

Vegas can be beautiful at night. Of course they have to ruin it by putting on a big-ass water show...but we thought we'd spare you that spectacle.
