Kayla’s cousin Ron and his wife Carol have been vacationing in Tahoe for many years and in 2007 they retired and bought a home there. We were glad to leave our big RV sitting in it's snug space next to their home, and enjoy the driving tours, hikes, cycling and beach walks around the lake. Smoke from the Rim Fire near Yosemite was everywhere, moving in and out, but mostly in, so unfortunately we did not see Lake Tahoe at its best. However, we enjoyed being there and imagining what a clear blue sky would look like. Every year on Labour Day Weekend the Nevada Casinos host a fireworks display from a barge on the lake. So at 9:30 PM on Sunday we took camp chairs down to the beach and watched a great display. By ... read more

5:00 am - THUMP!! Marcia - "Oh my God, a bear is ramming the RV!" Todd - "Tommy fell out of bed." Turns out Todd was right this time. Tommy had rolled right out of the overhead cab compartment, falling about 3 feet to the floor below with a very loud THUMP! Thankfully, no harm done, other than an absurdly early start to the day. Luckily all were able to get back to sleep for a few hours. Good thing, too, as our day was delightfully full once again. Our plan (as of 24 hours before) was to rent a jet ski this morning and have Todd take the kids out in turns while Marcia stayed on the beach with the other kids for swimming and sunbathing. We had had a plan yesterday as well to ... read more

Finally! Here are the entries the kids wrote and conceived completely on their own. The pictures are all theirs as well, or at least taken directly from their cameras. Enjoy! Maggie's Blog Day 12 – Highway after Highway Another late morning this morning for every camper except for the expert (Daddy), who got up at sunrise, unplugged the RV and we were off! Although the highways were bumpy, some of us deeper sleepers had the privilege of sleeping in to about 9:00 before our groggy faces left our pillows. Another uneventful driving day. Whoop-de-doo. Although loving the open fields, with mountains in the distance, there’s only so much “grass and grain” you can take before it gets tiring. Billy finally allowed me to teach him the card game that’s called “Rummy” by Daddy and “Gin” by ... read more

We headed to California today, which luckily is only about 8 miles down the road from our campsite in Southern Lake Tahoe. A surprisingly well-developed, commercial resort town - a far cry from the places we've been hanging our hats lately. We skipped the casinos and chain restaurants, though. Instead, we took a Gondola ride up Heavenly Mountain. The views from the midpoint observation deck were astounding. If I hadn't known better, I would have sworn we were in the Caribbean, the water was so blue and teal and clear. We rose about 9,000 feet, marveling along the way at the feat of construction erecting this tourist treat must have been. We have no idea how anyone scaled the virtually vertical rockface we watched unroll beneath us to clear trees, erect poles and string cables. We ... read more

Our day began with Todd finally getting to do what he had envisioned doing the whole trip - waking before the rest of us, unhooking the RV and starting down the road as we continued sleeping. It went almost according to plan. :-) Turns out the back bed is quite bouncy when in motion. And Billy has been rising with the roosters most days of the trip, today no exception. So, half of us were up and awake when Todd pulled out of Salt Lake City heading west on I-80 for Reno. But we got on the road by 7:00 am, which set us up perfectly for a marathon driving day. Some of our first "sights" as we left town were the salt flats - vast expanses of white that look deceptively like snow fields, but ... read more

Sorry friends that we are so late posting this blog. It's been a busy few days! We are staying at Harvey's Hotel, which is on stateline drive, and as the name suggests, once you cross the street from the hotel, you are in California. My first impressions of Tahoe were surpassed today as we had glorious sunshine and fresh allergen-free air. The last two days of torrential rain here have crisped up the atmosphere and put pollen in its place. We decided to stay 3 nights so that we could really kick back and take a break after putting in so much mileage the last few days. I mean, other than the break we also took in Ely for two days. So to recap our activities here in no particular order: - did a wine tour ... read more

Hi everyone, Just a quick note from Lake Tahoe - we have been out playing for the last couple of days, and haven't left enough time this morning to catch up on the blog to tell you all about our experiences here in Tahoe. We are leaving in a few minutes for Sacramento, where we will be spending the night with an old friend and catching up on the last few years! We will try to get the blog done later today or tomorrow morning! And yes, it's our 4th wedding anniversary today! Thanks Ron and Bev for thinking of us on our special day! Talk soon, Helli... read more
